Description
He's HEEE-eeeere!As a follow-up to my 60,000-Hit commemorative and as part of my continuing efforts to see if I can line up fanfic co-writers, here is my teaser pic to reveal that yes, the infamous Hobgoblin WILL have a part to play in my Spectacular Spider-Man fanfic plans. I'll be following this up with a full design pic in short order. But for now, this should whet everyone's appetite.
Those who are well-versed in their comic book history will undoubtedly recognize this image (and the title thereof) as being inspired by 1983's "Amazing Spider-Man", issue #238, which marked the Hobgoblin's first appearance. Granted, on that cover, the Hobgoblin is seen destroying Spider-Man's costume, but replacing it with the Green Goblin costume, to me, was far more significant in its symbolism.
After all, let's be honest, folks. We ALL know that Roderick Kingsley is the ONLY Goblin that matters.^_^
I have to admit, though, this is the most dubious I've ever been on any art project I've worked on to date. While I refused to be deterred and continued to press onward, even as I moved from the pencil work to the hard lines, the whole thing just looked like a jumbled mess and I really couldn't tell which way was up, just by looking at it. It wasn't until I started adding the color in that everything started to finally come together. Still, while I'm reasonably pleased with the outcome, the final product still seems overly cartoonish, even by SSM design standards.
But like I said, this is just a teaser pic. I'll be following it up with a full-design image fairly soon, so everyone can see just how badass I really plan to make the Hobgoblin out to be. In the meantime, I hope this will tide everyone over. And hopefully, maybe intrigue a few fanfic writers enough that they might be interested in joining my cause.^_^

Well, I didn't come up with them all at once. They came to me over time. I just found places in the timeline for them to fit. Kind of have to, since SSM has an overarching timeline where the individual stories all tie into each other and short-term actions have long-term consequences.
Now my Green Lantern: TAS ideas, THOSE came to me all at once...over the course of four days, to be exact.^_^

Glad you like the pic, though.

I gotta say, I'm surprised that Hobgoblin originally came after the Green Goblin. I was going with the continuity of Spider-Man: TAS, which showed that Norman, affect being driven crazy by the performance enhancer mist, took the stock of weaponry he made for the Hobgoblin and became the Green Goblin. There's also the multi-part Goblin War arc that shows Green Goblin superior. Still, if Hobgoblin is really the greater threat, than it's kind of a shame that SSM was cancelled before his appearance. Still, I bet the creators would've loved the design you've come up for him, and I'm looking forward to when the full image of him comes out. Hopefully, it'll start attracting attention for you. Good luck with that, and way to go with the double post.

Oh, you can't go with that continuity. After all, in the 90s animated series, Hobgoblin was Jason Macendale, who, in the comics, was actually the SECOND Hobgoblin...and not even HALF the Goblin that Roderick Kingsley was. But at that point, it still hadn't been revealed in the comics that Roderick Kingsley was the first Hobgoblin. That's because the Hobgoblin's creator, Roger Stern, refused to tell anyone who he was. So Macendale was the only Hobgoblin who's identity was public knowledge.
But yeah, to me, Kingsley was always the better Goblin. I don't know why everyone insists on having this crush on Norman because as far as I'm concerned, he's ALWAYS been an overrated schmuck. The way I see it, Kingsley could take out Norman anytime he wants to. He's just never considered Norman to be truly worth his time.
Well, I'm hoping to have a full design pic out very soon. As for the double posting, I figured I had some time to kill before the counter turned over, so I'd get a second pic ready.

You know, I don't think Kingsley wouldn't like it either if he found out that Norman cheated him out of those Rhino specs he was after.

Maybe. But I think in the long term, he'd realize that the Goblin gear is the FAR better deal. After all, in Rhino's case, he's pretty much trapped in that thing. He can't take it off.

I can guess that it wouldn't be difficult to replicate the Goblin equipment, if Kingsley can acquire the specs. But how does Kingsley even know that Norman is the Green Goblin?

Because when Georgie Hill came across one of Osborn's old Goblin lairs and sold the equipment to Kingsley, said lair and equipment also included journals, which Norman had personally written (which is how Kingsley discovered his identity). So Kingsley just took the equipment he appropriated and altered it to suit his own needs. He also acquired more by raiding all of Osborn's remaining lairs, that had been scattered throughout the city.

I'm sorry, but I can't seem to find this 'Georgie Hill'. Sorry to be a bother, but it seems that for every answer I get, I end up with two more questions. Man, the Marvel universe is as wrapped tightly together as the OP universe.

That's because Georgie Hill never made it past his first issue. He was just a two-bit crook who was running from Spider-Man one day and he stumbled onto one of Osborn's old Goblin hideouts while trying to hide. Thinking he could make a quick buck, consequence free, he sold the equipment to Kingsley...who then promptly murdered him by blowing up the van he'd used to "transport the goods". After all, he couldn't afford to have some cheap hood running around who knew his identity and would flip on him in a heartbeat to get out of some purse-snatching charge.
Obviously, in my version, Kingsley's solution will be less...severe.

Well, he's gonna kind of erase his memory of the last few days. He has access to devices and processes that allow him to do that.

Eh, I guess some people prefer villains that came first to new versions trying to get in on the act. Sort of the saying 'Nothing beats the original'.
So, what makes the Kingsley Hobgoblin more threatening than the Green Goblin?

Well, I could get into the whole thing about how he brainwashed Ned Leeds, framed him as the Hobgoblin (which led to Ned's subsequent assassination, set up by Jason Macendale so he could become the new Hobgoblin) and got away with it for almost 25 years. But that's really more the fault of Hobgoblin's creator than of Hobgoblin himself. When Roger Stern came up with the idea of the Hobgoblin, he refused to tell anyone at Marvel who he really was...even up to the end of his run on Amazing Spider-Man. He was so high on having a secret that no one else knew that he wouldn't even tell Tom Defalco, who had been brought in to take over the book. So, without Stern there to contradict him, Defalco made the reveal that Ned Leeds was the Hobgoblin, even though he wasn't.
Over the years, Stern would try and convince people at Marvel that Leeds couldn't possibly have been the Hobgoblin, that the REAL Hobgoblin was still out there and needed to be found. But because he still refused to tell anyone who the Hobgoblin really was, no one would listen to him. Eventually, it got to the point where he had to take a hard look in the mirror and realize that his own ego had basically made him the Hobgoblin's greatest accomplice for nearly 25 years. The Hobgoblin had led an innocent man to his death...and Stern's own silence allowed him to get away with it. So it got to a point with him where he realized the only way to expose what the Hobgoblin had done was to finally swallow his pride and make the reveal that Roderick Kingsley was the Hobgoblin all along.
Now if you'd like a more substantive argument as to why I feel the Kingsley is the superior Goblin, it's basically because he has all of Norman Osborn's strengths, but none of his weaknesses. Sure, Kingsley's got an ego, but he keeps it in check. He also underwent a perfected process with Osborn's performance enhancers, which granted him all of Goblin strength, but with none of the psychological side effects.
But most crucially (and I plan to say as much in my fanfics, should they be written)...Kingsley doesn't share Osborn's obsession with Spider-Man...OR his FEAR. After all, that's the whole reason why Osborn's been obsessed with Spider-Man all these years...because Osborn's AFRAID of him. Kingsley's NEVER been afraid of Spider-Man. In fact, truthfully, unless Spider-Man was in the same room and NEEDED to be dealt with, Kingsley has never given him a second thought.

Don't forget that Kingsley got away with it. All he suffered for his schemes was a light jail sentence and then he retired to some sunny tropical beach in comfort.

Well, the point of what I said was, it was Roger Stern's own silence that HELPED Kingsley get away with it. As for him receiving a "light" sentence, well, what ACTUALLY happened was that Norman Osborn broke Kingsley out of jail so he could gain access to Kingsley's business and resources (as part of some ham-fisted attempt on the part of the writers to show, once and for all that "Norman Osborn is the one true SUPERIOR Goblin", which I always felt was BS). In the end, Kingsley had a tidy nest egg stored away that Norman knew nothing about, and has since been living abroad in relative comfort.

Some might consider that a mistake. Many villains have paid the price for underestimating the hero and believing they aren't a threat. Hobgoblin would have to be as dangerous as Venom in order to get away with that.

Oh, underestimating Spider-Man was a mistake Hobgoblin only ever made once...which is what ultimately led to his unmasking. But as a general rule, Hobgoblin never underestimated Spider-Man. He just never saw any reason to worry about him if he wasn't around.
