Description He's HEEE-eeeere!

As a follow-up to my 60,000-Hit commemorative and as part of my continuing efforts to see if I can line up fanfic co-writers, here is my teaser pic to reveal that yes, the infamous Hobgoblin WILL have a part to play in my Spectacular Spider-Man fanfic plans.  I'll be following this up with a full design pic in short order.  But for now, this should whet everyone's appetite.

Those who are well-versed in their comic book history will undoubtedly recognize this image (and the title thereof) as being inspired by 1983's "Amazing Spider-Man", issue #238, which marked the Hobgoblin's first appearance.  Granted, on that cover, the Hobgoblin is seen destroying Spider-Man's costume, but replacing it with the Green Goblin costume, to me, was far more significant in its symbolism.

After all, let's be honest, folks.  We ALL know that Roderick Kingsley is the ONLY Goblin that matters.^_^

I have to admit, though, this is the most dubious I've ever been on any art project I've worked on to date.  While I refused to be deterred and continued to press onward, even as I moved from the pencil work to the hard lines, the whole thing just looked like a jumbled mess and I really couldn't tell which way was up, just by looking at it.  It wasn't until I started adding the color in that everything started to finally come together.  Still, while I'm reasonably pleased with the outcome, the final product still seems overly cartoonish, even by SSM design standards.

But like I said, this is just a teaser pic.  I'll be following it up with a full-design image fairly soon, so everyone can see just how badass I really plan to make the Hobgoblin out to be.  In the meantime, I hope this will tide everyone over.  And hopefully, maybe intrigue a few fanfic writers enough that they might be interested in joining my cause.^_^

Kind of interesting that you have the Hobgoblin's face mostly covered by the hood with just his fangs and eyes showing. That sort of makes him look mysterious and creepy.

That was the whole purpose of this pic as a teaser.  The design pic is going to be meant to really show him off.

Besides, back in the Kingsley days of Hobgoblin, he was often drawn with his face obscured.

BivGalPanAndRaa In reply to TuxedAaron [2015-10-25 05:33:34 +0000 UTC]

I meant that artist used the TAS version of Electro. You have to admit that that incarnation was pretty incredible. Kind of makes me wish that the SSM version was like that.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

TuxedAaron In reply to BivGalPanAndRaa [2015-10-25 05:40:55 +0000 UTC]

Well, I think Electro in the 90s series was meant to reflect a period in the comics where Electro was seriously overpowered to the point where he could pretty much do ANYTHING electrical.  He could even counter the abilities of psychic Mutants by generating interference with the electrical synapses in their brain, thus preventing them from using their powers.

SSM Electro was meant primarily to be an amalgam of Classic Electro and Ultimate Electro.

BivGalPanAndRaa In reply to TuxedAaron [2015-10-25 06:02:41 +0000 UTC]

Well, you have to admit, a ghost with the same abilities as 90s Electro would be a real challenge for Danny (Technus and Vortex don't count because their powers revolve around technology and weather rather than just pure electricity).

TuxedAaron In reply to BivGalPanAndRaa [2015-10-25 08:18:52 +0000 UTC]

Well, assuming he's not insulated against it.  Back when the Avengers were being overhauled to include new members like Spider-Man, Spider-Woman, Luke Cage and Wolverine, the team has to take care of a prison break perpetrated by Electro.  When they track Electro down in an alley, Cage asks Spider-Man how he usually handles the situation, at which point, Spidey simply answers, "I'd web up my fists and beat the crap out of him".  But when Cage volunteers to be the one to do the beating, Electro immediately surrenders.

Bottom line, if Danny can come up with a way to insulate himself (or if his parents can), the guy ultimately wouldn't pose a ginormous threat.

BivGalPanAndRaa In reply to TuxedAaron [2015-10-26 04:21:58 +0000 UTC]

Was that Electro as powerful as the version the Red Skull created?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

TuxedAaron In reply to BivGalPanAndRaa [2015-10-26 10:43:36 +0000 UTC]

Well, he certainly SEEMED that way, since the initial prison break saw him blowing out an entire wall of the prison with a bolt of lighting that looked like a full power, earth-shattering, Kamehameha.

But then, I think that scene was mostly meant to take a jab at all the times Spider-Man has faced him before, because that's usually what Spidey would do.  He's insulate himself with webbing or something else available, so Electro's power couldn't touch him.

No.  The plan is that Spider-Man is going to cleanse Norman's system of the Globulin Green with an antidote that Curt Connors develops, using Harry's blood.  But that won't happen until Norman returns to New York.

Comic book logic.  Of course, having access to the actual chemicals helps, too...which Connors will have, because before this whole thing happens, Hobgoblin blackmails Miles Warren into perfecting the Globulin Green formula.  So there'll still be samples laying around, even after Warren is exposed to the chemical, driven insane and turns into the Jackal (which ultimately leads to Gwen's acquisition of spider-powers).

TuxedAaron In reply to bleachcrater [2015-10-09 15:23:31 +0000 UTC]

Well, here's how that part of it plays out.  And this will all take place shortly after Gwen finds out that Peter is Spider-Man.

- Miles Warren begins experiencing blackouts as a result of his exposure to the Globulin Green.  He's also been mysteriously losing weight, becoming leaner and more muscular.  Around the same time, Gwen discovers the Hobgoblin's blackmail data on him and learns that Warren was not only responsible for driving Curt Connors from the university, but also transforming Sergei Kravinoff into Kraven the Hunter, Mac Gargan into the Scropion and Mark Allen into the Molten Man. However, before she can act, she is captured by Warren's Globulin Green-induced alter ego, The Jackal. Warren's fascination with Spider-Man, coupled by his fear of the Hobgoblin's blackmail, created in the Jackal, an obsession to replicate Spider-Man's powers, giving him what he feels will be the power to defend himself against ANY who might threaten him. And with Gwen in his clutches, he intends to test his replicated process on HER.

Spider-Man intervenes, but is unable to prevent the experiment from running its course. However, the result has Gwen acquiring spider powers of her own and they fight off the Jackal together. But even with lab destroyed during the fight (and Peter and Gwen both believe he was destroyed with it), The Jackal makes off with a piece of Spider-Man's costume...which has DNA that he can extract.

- Before Gwen can make sense of her new powers, in addition to Peter's double-life, a new problem arises. Harry, spiraling badly, begins seeing images of Norman and even hearing his voice. Driven by these "visions", Harry becomes the new Green Goblin and sets out to avenge his father's "death". Believing that he can get to Spider-Man through Peter, he attacks Gwen's house while Peter is having dinner with the family and abducts Gwen. George Stacy is injured in the attack, but while he's rescued by Spider-Man, the last thing he whispers before he loses consciousness and is taken away by the EMTs is, "Peter...save Gwen..." revealing that he knew Peter's identity all along.

Spider-Man's fight with the Green Goblin takes them to the Brooklyn bridge, where Gwen is accidentally knocked off. Spider-Man tries to rescue her with his webbing, but Gwen is only miraculously saved with the help of her newly-acquired spider powers. Nevertheless, Spider-Man flies into a rage at Harry's callous actions and attacks without mercy. But it's discovered that what Harry believes have been visions of Norman's "ghost" are actually holograms and messages being shown to him through the security system in Harry's house (and even through his Goblin equipment)...a deception that is ultimately exposed by Hobgoblin.

Harry is incarcerated and Gwen is safe. But George is paralyzed from the waist down in the attack. Gwen also makes a critical decision to leave New York, deciding that she needs to take some time away and decide if she truly has what it takes to be "Spider-Man's girl". Peter is heartbroken as a result, but knows exactly who he can take it out on. With Hobgoblin proving that Norman is still alive somewhere, Spider-Man publicly calls him out, even going so far as to web a giant message in the middle of Times Square..."NORMAN OSBORN IS A COWARD". Hobgoblin, meanwhile, can only look on in amusement, realizing that Norman's narcissism can't POSSIBLY let THIS go unanswered.

I don't remember if you put that last part about Gwen in your note to me, but I don't think Gwen is going to consider herself "Spider-Man's Girl" or whether she's good enough to be one. To be honest, it sounds a little sexist, and Gwen would probably be more tormented over her father's injury and her identity as a superhuman, than her relationship with Peter/Spider-Man.

Of course, her decision to leave would affect all that, but personally Gwen would consider herself more than just someone else's girlfriend.

TuxedAaron In reply to The-Solar-Surfer [2015-10-12 13:13:16 +0000 UTC]

Okay, the synopsis there might have sounded a tad glib.  But the fact of the matter is that ever since she found out that Peter is Spider-Man, the hits have just kept on coming.  Between getting experimented on by Miles Warren and then her father being crippled...and these were all incidents where Spider-Man was the main target and she got caught in the crossfire.  So it's virtually impossible for her to not see the common denominator here.

Bottom line, Gwen needs to take some time away, to clear her head and decide what kind of future she wants for herself.  And for good or ill, one of the main choices HAS to be whether she can stay with Peter or not.  Because being with Peter means being with Spider-Man.  And if this is the kind of life Spider-Man leads, then the last few days are only going to be the beginning.  But Gwen also knows that she can't make that decision if she's anywhere NEAR Peter right now, because the emotions are just running too high.  So she has to get as far away as she can.

George and MJ understand her feelings and respect her decision to leave.  George holds on to a letter Gwen wrote for Peter, to be given to him on the same day Gwen is set to leave.  But when Peter tries to go after her, he finds MJ at the airport, who informs him that Gwen had switched to an earlier flight.  However, MJ's claim turns out to be a lie as there's a scene afterwards, where she sits next to Gwen, who's still waiting for her flight.  This is an idea of some of the dialogue I had in mind for that...

"I don't have to tell you how much I hated to do that, right?" MJ remarks, in reference to her lying to Peter just a few moments ago, especially after seeing the tears rolling down his face as his heart broke at the news.

"I know," Gwen answers, still hanging her head, which is covered under a hood. "But I just couldn't face him right now."

"Is there anything you need?" MJ asks, feeling that it was the only question to ask at that moment.

"Yeah...," Gwen replies through a cracked voice as she lifts her head slightly, turning to look at MJ with pleading eyes, welling up with tears. "Tell me I'm wrong.  Tell me that I'm being selfish, that this is a mistake.  Tell me I can't go, please."

"Oh Gwen...," MJ sighs as she puts her arms around Gwen and hugs her tightly.  It would be several moments before MJ would finally pull back to give Gwen her answer.

"Look, I've gotta be honest.  If it was me...," MJ starts to say, pausing briefly before raising her head to look Gwen straight in the eye, "...I don't know if I could handle what you're going through right now, either.  You've got some REALLY heavy decisions you've got to make right now, Gwen.  But you and I both know you won't be able to make them if you're here."

I hope that maybe puts things in a little better perspective and doesn't seem as one-note as how it originally read.

TuxedAaron In reply to BivGalPanAndRaa [2015-10-09 15:55:31 +0000 UTC]

Pretty much.  The idea that was mapped out is that J. Jonah Jameson, still hot over Spider-Man getting his son incarcerated, pays Miles Warren to create a super-powered "hero" to defeat him. He also pays Mac Gargan an equal amount to be the guinea pig.  Miles Warren transforms Mac Gargan in a similar way to the method he used to create Kraven the Hunter.  He just uses scorpion DNA this time.  He also creates a scorpion-like armor for Gargan, which makes him even stronger.  The end result is the Scorpion, who easily overwhelms Spider-Man.

When Gargan thinks he's gotten the job done after Spider-Man is buried under a collapsing building, he goes to Warren to be changed back. But Warren, who was only interested in MAKING the Scorpion, not UN-MAKING him, has no such method for doing so. However, Warren passes the blame onto Jameson, implying that he warned Jameson that the procedure was irreversible and Jameson didn't care. This sends Gargan after Jameson, which is exactly what Warren wants, so as to eliminate any possibility of Jameson implicating him later.

Luckily, Spider-Man survived his initial tussle with Scorpion and faces him again, this time armed with Gene cleanser from ESU to undo Gargan's mutation.  Of course, Gargan still has the enhanced abilities of the armor, but now it's a much fairer fight, and Spider-Man is able to defeat him AND save Jameson's life.  This also leads to Warren now being officially on Spider-Man's radar.

BivGalPanAndRaa In reply to TuxedAaron [2015-10-17 05:45:31 +0000 UTC]

One thing confuses me. Warren knew about the gene cleanser at GSU, so why did he say he had no way to change Gargan back to normal?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

TuxedAaron In reply to BivGalPanAndRaa [2015-10-17 14:21:33 +0000 UTC]

Well, he didn't know how the gene cleanser affected Connors.  He just found out about the Lizard from Connor's notes and knew that a vial was missing from the lab when Venom stole it to use on Spider-Man (only to have it used on himself instead).  And Spider-Man only takes more in the HOPES that it will work on Gargan.  Since he doesn't know exactly what Warren did to him, he's not entirely sure.
