Description
Well, after nine days off, I'm happy to say that my "Birthday Week Series" has been gloriously productive. Five pictures in nine days is really not bad, especially since it was only on Thursday/Friday that I started scanning them. But I digress. This is Picture #5 and it comes to us, courtesy of an Art Trade between myself and (hey, look at that...my first art trade). What she asked for was basically a picture of her goth OC, Alexander, sharing a romantic moment with one of 's future OCs, Amanda "Maxx" Fenton.
The idea for the image I ultimately came up with takes a cue from Danny and Sam (the blushing and shyness of their as their relationship began to grow) as well as the early days of Miss Martian and Superboy from the Young Justice animated series (MM's crushing for SB being obvious, while SB keeps her at arm's length). In the end, what you see here is more or less self-explanatory. Amanda has sidled up to Alex, being all tender and flirty. But while Alex remains stiff and stern, not returning her advances, the blush on his cheeks and the concealed grin make it apparent that he's not exactly complaining, either.
, I hope you like what you see and that this was worth the wait. And , if you happen to come across this pic, I hope I did your character justice. Everyone else, just enjoy.

Huh, how am I just noticing this now? This actually looks pretty cute, you caught Maxx's personality very nicely ^^

Well, to be honest, I wasn't 100% sure you WOULD notice it. So I consider it something of a lucky break. In any event, I'm glad you're pleased with the end product. Considering I didn't really know anything about Maxx's personality when I started the pic, I just kind of winged it. I guess I got lucky that I hit the right chord with her. Either way, again, glad you liked it.

Glad you like it. I'm just glad that this was a nice simple pic for me to do, as opposed to the last three, which were such massive projects in terms of detail.

Oh my!
This picture has been wonderfully done!
I simply adore it to bits!!! >u<
I love their expressions to be honest XD; very cheeky~
I also LOVE the way you've drawin them~<3 your style is very unique and prominent!
Thank you so so so sooooooo very much!!! I appreciate this greatly!!
And you'd like to know I've already begun inking your part of the art trade ^^ sorry it's taken me so long :c

So glad you love the pic. Yeah, pretty much as soon as you set the parameters for how you wanted them both to be (Maxx human and Alex goth), I pretty much ad the idea in my head for how I wanted it to look. And it came out pretty much precisely as I'd envisioned it.
As for your half of the art trade, good to hear that it's coming along. And don't worry if it's taking you a little extra time. I mean, come on. You asked for this back in May, right? If you can wait, so can I. Don't sweat it.
Again, glad the pic turned out just right for you.

Okay, well, what exactly is it that you don't like about it? I mean, I respect it if you don't, but I think Todd McFarlane once said it best..."To say that something sucks and just walk away doesn't help the creative process much."

its just a kinda clichΓ© *it feels kinda empty*
this pose wiht her next to him and pointing her thinger to the chest thing.
try something a little bit more frash
*or make a contextline picture.. a lot of cartoonists do that a lot*

Well, I don't really know either of these OCs. It was just what was requested of it, so I went with it.
In terms of content, I know the pic is simple. But to be honest, that's actually what I like about it. I mean the last three pics I did were just so massive in terms of content and took so long to complete, I was glad to have one come along that was really simple and I knew it would only take me a couple of hours to bang it out. It was just a nice, simple relief for me.

mmmhhmm mebey you got a point.
but you might work on your improvisation... improvisation is very very very important for everyone who wants to be a artist. and mebey do some paiper work drawnings.. if you can do digital you can do paiper better

Hey, pretty much as soon as the parameters for the picture were set, I already had an image in my head of how I wanted it to look. That sounds like improvisation to me. And for the record, I do draw on paper. What I do is simply scan my pencil drawings and Photoshop them for the hard lines and color. But everything starts out on pencil. Pencil drawings just tend to scan kind of sloppy.

sorry but improvisation is not enything like this
*already had an image in your head of how you wanted it to look" it hass nothing to do wiht real improvisation*
and Pencil drawings are great even if it looks sloppy.
i got a lot of pencil drawnings in my gallery
and it never didt look sloppy to others

And exactly how DOES one show improvisation in art? Once the picture is done, it's done. What's there to improvise? I'm sorry, but you're doing it again, saying that something is just flat-out wrong and not saying why.
As for pencil drawings, maybe they don't look HORRIBLE as scans, but I still prefer the way I've been doing them. I'd like to think I've gotten pretty good at it.

I wasent talking about improvisation in your art itself!!. i was talking about improvisation wiht Context item's poses and turns of events!!. my art teacher ones said, improvisation is the most important thing to a Artist... one allday Item can have 100 uses.
take butch hartman for example, he dident just draw!! he toke 15 item's and put tham on table and made 100 idea's of how to use tham for in the fairly odd parents show.
or Jonas Geirnaert for another example... he hass the worst drawning style Ever!! and yet he is the most awesome artist in dutchland
WHY??? he was a master of turns of events!!!.
he made the simple idea of a leprechaun meeting a Enchanted waterCAN
who says if you scream 2 times Turbo!!! he flys into fire.
DONT make your chachters (like as in this picture)
stand like tailor's Dummies!!!
make tham look interesting or aware of the world.
You dont have to draw a background. just show that you can have fun wiht chachter's in small events...
like the girl who wants to beat down a fly
or let the guy fall into a blackholl???
or make the Enchanted waterCAN say turbo turbo
to let the other 2 get on fire...
just show me THAT you CARE... that there is a funny bone in you!!!
(dont make the same mistake like most of the Artists on DA)

Okay. You want to pick a fight over this? You REALLY want to pick a fight over this?! Alright. But just bear in mind that you wanted it this way.
Did it occur to you even once, at any point during that entire "Holier-Than-Thou" tirade you were spewing, that both characters were standing PRECISELY the way I wanted them to? They weren't just standing around, as you so lovingly put it, "like tailor's dummies", doing nothing. Note the closeness of Amanda to Alex in this pic. Note how she's behaving, being purposely flirty. But there's a purpose to the way Alex is standing, too. Standing stiff as a board, not returning her advances, his fists tightly clenched, he's trying to put on this air that he's actually annoyed by her affections. And yet, he can't hide the blush on his cheeks or stop the smile from crossing his lips...
That was what was going on in that pic. And I don't think it needed anything overly elaborate or require a "deeper" message beneath. Not everything has to have a "true meaning" buried underneath 10 layers of surface area. Like Sigmund Freud once said..."Sometimes a cigar is JUST a cigar."
If that's still not good enough for you, then guess what? That's just too damn bad! Either tell me what you think YOU would have done, since you seem to think you're so brilliant, or get off the soap box and quit wasting my time.

I never said i wanted to pick a fight over it.
you only think that its all about fights between you and me.
I just wanted to give some helpfull advice
to somebody who is still growning in hiss work.
but I geass you dont need a Guide or a friend who dosent want you to fall in the same trap a lot of other artist fall into that easy.
than i geass its true what my father ones said.
if a soldier walks in the quicksand and wants to save himself wihtout help

Well, if you weren't trying to pick a fight, you had a funny way of showing it. With the message you wrote before, instead of making constructive suggestions, it was like you had nothing better to do than talk down to me. It's like you were saying, "This is what I'm talking about, you idiot! Don't you get it?!" Even this last message feels that way. It's like you're just turning up your nose at me and going, "Well, if you're too stupid to listen to my brilliant advice, then fine! Be that way!" That's the air you've been putting on this whole time. I hope this isn't how you criticize other people's work.

listen I have a lot of other stuff to make and to do
than talking to a hothead brick wall like you
who feels attacked when ever he encounters a No or a you could do better comment. its sad to see you like this.. realy it dose
(and No i dont criticize artists that much. its a rare thing i do so)
i doing drawning, painting, sculptures, teapot crockery's, texture scarves, T-shirt designs, and making Animations and comic books
in a ART gallery... so yes i know what art is and how to treat it right.
and no there are artists who are greater than I or you ever can be.
my friend Roan is one of the greatist painters i ever saw at work and he lives hiss life in a wheel chair!! THINK ABOUT THAT FOR A SECOND
he makes penguins so real on real paint!! you can feel the melting snow
and by the way!! my advice is not brilliant!!!
its basic advice to help you out of the trap enybody falls into..
but you dont exept it so you keep taking to me like i am stapping on your feet or something...
and ones again I said nothing about you being idiot or you're too stupid to listen...
you think the other way around too much
I am not trying to pick a fight or hurting your feelings AT all
I am glass clean honest to you.. and i dont want you to end up like a lot of other artists

Oh, I'm sure you've been paying attention to what I've been saying. But perhaps in the heat of all this, you haven't been paying much attention to what YOU'VE been saying. What I want to do right now is take a moment and just kind of share with you a couple of the things you said in the last couple of messages you've given me, so you can maybe see things a little more from my perspective.
This is the first thing. Here's where it all went downhill for you...
Now really, how necessary was that? I'm sure at the time, you thought you were being funny, but from where I was standing, the impression you were making is that you don't seem to think I'm all that bright. An impression that you then compounded with the whole lecture that followed, citing artist after artist. It was like you were trying to show off how knowledgeable you are.
And then, of course, there were points like this...
"DONT make your chachters (like as in this picture) stand like tailor's Dummies!!!"
"just show me THAT you CARE... that there is a funny bone in you!!!"
You may have thought of that as just harmless enthusiasm at the time. But seriously, take a minute and put yourself on the other side of that. If you were actually sitting down, talking to someone, and they were screaming in your face like that, would you REALLY take that as any kind of constructive advice? I doubt it.
I should also point out, you never once said how YOU would have drawn the picture, which is one of the first things I would have done if I was offering a critique. I would have said, "Yeah, okay. But if it was ME, I would have gone THIS way with it." And then I would have outlined my suggestion.
Now, if you had done THAT for me, that would have been actual communication and I could have come back and said, "Okay, point taken." Then I could have outlined the reasons why I did what I did and we could've just agreed to disagree. But that never happened. Instead, you came at me with, "Oh, look at this guy and how he does things. Look at that guy and how he does things." And I'm like, "Yeah, so what's your point?" And that was another part of the problem that had me thinking that you were just trying to toot your own and show off your vast knowledge. You were TALKING, but you weren't SAYING anything. Instead of pointing out how this example or that example could actually apply to my work, you just threw it at me and expected that I would just immediately get on board with your train of thought. Not a very respectful approach if you want to get someone to listen.
Despite what you may believe, I don't have a problem with criticism from people (ask guys like . But if you're going to offer a critique, give me something I can hang my hat on. Make an actual suggestion. That's all I ask.

I beleve we are not done wiht this argument bifore the year 2013
if you frow all the things i comment
(who you think are all bad things) frowing back again in my face
wihtout thinking about the usefull parts of what i said
(and about that holl If you were actually sitting down, talking to someone, and they were screaming in your face like that, I HAVE SEE WORSE in my life.. and ones again you are thinking i am screaming in your face..
your the only one who thinks that way)
and I think you are already till your neck in the quicksand
bikus you think "a cigar is JUST a cigar" a true cartoonist Never says that line!!.
there is a clear diffrants between a "FANartist"
and a "ProfessionalAnimator in the learn"
and you are more of a "FANartist"

TuxedAaron In reply to sixteen6stars [2011-10-17 16:58:48 +0000 UTC]
Well, first of all, I never claimed to be any kind of professional, did I? If I did, I'd already be accepting Commissions now, don't you think?
As for this argument, it IS going to be over, because at this moment, I'm walking away from it. One thing I've noticed in all of this is that, again, you've gone out of your way to avoid giving me an idea of how you would have drawn this pic if it was your project. And it's clear to me now that the only reason you've done that is because you don't have one. You've just become so convinced that you're right at this point that you can't see anyone else's opinion now but your own.
So the only way I see to putting a stop to it is to get off the train. Hey, one of us has to be the mature one and see that this is going nowhere fast. Agree to disagree. Trust me, it's going to make your life a lot easier.

Okay, this is actually starting to amuse me now. 'Cause you're just gonna go down swingin', aren't you?
Maybe you're the one who needs to re-read what I wrote a couple messages back. Because all you gave me were examples of things that other artists do and you never explained in any way how these examples could be applied to the picture I drew. You just said, "Look how this guy does things, look how that guy does things." And I'm like, "Look at what? How do a leprechaun and a watering can apply to MY picture?" Is a little elaboration too much to ask? You're like one of those guys at the store I work at where they want cigarettes, but all they tell me is the brand they want and I'm supposed to just psychically divine the rest.
And, once again, you still haven't told me how YOU would have drawn the picture. Forget talking about other artists. What would YOU have done? You want to REALLY help me, answer THAT question.
I take you back to who commented recently that in a few of my latest pics, the characters' legs are too long. To make his argument clearer, he noted that as an anatomic point of reference, when someone lifts their leg, their knee only goes about as high as their chest. He was right, and I admitted that he was right.
My point is, THAT's something I can actually hang my hat on. THAT's advice I can USE as a guide for future projects. But I haven't gotten any of that from you. Maybe if I did, we wouldn't be having this problem right now. But you're just expecting me to instantly know what you're thinking. Maybe when my mutant abilities manifest, I'll be able to. But for right now...
