The phrase, "perfection lies in the details" is an understatement here. Finding so much.....DEPTH in one's character is beyond rare, it's almost hard to believe that so many aspects can be described.Β

I wonder why it took me so long to find this...

Anyway, a much deserved thank you, if you didn't have enough already, is in order for putting in so much effort and dedication (and most likely, time) into the design and story of Muzafr. So, thank you for sharing this. Β

Nah, she prefers them crispy! X) But she doesn't shy away from raw sometimes, heh.

Correct! Regardless of their belief system, background, or motivation, if they make it a point to target civilians, they run the risk of becoming targeted for a fiery raid from above~ She's quite non-discriminatory in that regard.

The idea here is good and the character is very interesting, but from a professional point of view your graphic design choices are questionable.

For one, if you're going to put all your text on the ref sheet, do it in a more organized way. I don't know what to read first! The text boxes are packed together and overcrowded with no margin- it LOOKS tedious to read, turning viewers off before they can even give it a try. Text walls are generally not a good choice when you're trying to draw the eye.

Also, consider that horizontally-aligned posters like this DO NOT read well in a digital format where I have to use two sliders to read everything. A thin, vertical format is better suited for something not meant to be printed, maybe something similar to this .

Some of your images (the pupil size images, for example) are distractingly low-res.

I personally am also getting tired of seeing the skysealer-esque ref sheets. Maybe try to switch it up a bit!

All-in-all, this character is really neat and the illustrations are beautiful. I think you would benefit from picking up a book on poster design for next year's ref.

TwilightSaint In reply to ttazo [2016-05-19 16:08:30 +0000 UTC]

Thanks for all the feedback! Β This ref is a couple years old, so my more recent ones are more polished and vary in layout depending on the character, (aka, no more lower-res detail shots! XD ) Β But you brought up some good points I hadn't thought of!

For the text boxes specifically, is there a different method/placement you'd recommend so it appears more organized? Β I try to place the text box close to the detail that it's referring to, i.e; wing text next to the wings, etc.

ttazo In reply to TwilightSaint [2016-05-19 16:25:39 +0000 UTC]

I think in the case of the text boxes that reference the illustrations, its more a matter of the organization of the sections. As in, the boxes that separate illustrations into whatever part of the body you're trying to highlight. If I were following the western left-to-right, up-to-down rule of reading, I'd read the info text that spans the top of the reference first. However, the stuff I really want to get to first is definitely the section with the fullbody illustration. Whichever I read first, I have to use both my sliders back and forth and back and forth to get to every piece of text. I think you should consider this in the next ref XD Your job is to guide the reader through the reference in a way that makes sense, not leave them guessing.

Its not too tough to navigate the text once I've focused on one section. The problem there is that there is no margin between the text and the text box and it all runs together into a big text wall, making it look like a very boring read at first glance. I would personally try to edit out as much unnecessary information as possible- this is a reference other artists will use and they don't necessarily need to know all of the history of the creature to create a visually-accurate drawing that keeps the creature in-character. You could maybe make a simpler reference just for other artists to use (with a backstory blurb and a few detailed explanations where needed) and a separate sheet that highlights the finer points of the character. That particular option is your preference.

Its the overall composition and unsuitability for web viewing that really bothers me here. When creating the sections, I would try to make ALL of them small enough that they can be viewed at full size on most screens without having to use the scrollbar. Just that fact would make reading the ref 80% easier. As I said earlier, a vertical orientation would also help.

Edit: It's worth mentioning that a LONG, THIN text box is much harder to read than a tall or square-shaped one.

TwilightSaint In reply to ttazo [2016-05-19 16:52:00 +0000 UTC]

Okay, I think I gotcha - you mean focusing on separating the specific detail sections, with both the detail shot and the text? Β And kind of making them more standalone? Β For example, section covering head and mouth over here with all the details and text, section covering wings and function with text over there? Β Rather than very close together?

And on your suggestion of guiding the viewer through the ref sheet, using what you'd mentioned as an example, starting with the main body shot at the upper right and working through details right-to-left and then downwards?

And gotcha on the text box sizes! Β I see what you mean, having to scroll back and forth left and right, rather than just being able to zoom in and read the whole thing, (or use the simple scroller on a mouse if the box is that long.) Β And I also follow on the margins of the boxes - you're saying the box 'frames' are just too close to the text itself, making it look tight and cluttered, yah?

I've honestly never really considered trying a vertical format, so I'll give that a whirl on one or two upcoming refs of personal characters I've been needing to do! Β Will be a fun challenge, and something a lot different than I'm used to!

DAng, wouldn't want to run into her when she's in a bad mood :3 I have to question though, what do you think would happen if she went up against an Abyss DAD? like 100% demon magic etc?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

TwilightSaint In reply to fatunicornz14 [2016-05-19 16:05:34 +0000 UTC]

Hmm, I hadn't thought of that! Β There are DADs in Muzafr's universe, (for example, Sniper sometimes does recon missions on them, lol,) but that's about the extent of any interaction between Muzafr and that species. Β She'd probably just use a hellish amount of fire to get rid of an Abyss DAD, haha.
