The next part of the '2012 Planetary Dragon Series!'

...Expect the rest of this series in the next month or so, before I go abroad, just in case...

Our well-known and beautifully decorated neighbor, Andromeda finally makes her appearance as the giant galaxy dragon! To put it in perspective, if our dragon here is to scale, our Solar System might...just /might/ fill up half a pixel or so of this entire image. Feeling tiny yet?

Slightly larger than the Milky Way, Andromeda is one of our closer neighbors in out little community of 30 galaxies or so. Andromeda is a spiral galaxy, and is so named because it can be seen in the Andromeda constellation. (Look up the Greek story of Andromeda. ) This galaxy is well-known due to it being able to be spotted with the naked eye on a clear night, or with high-powered binoculars or a telescope.

Andromeda must be an accident prone galaxy, because it is thought to have been formed, at least partially, from a galactic collision in the past. And...guess what? Unsurprisingly, as per my theme of galactic terrorists, Andromeda is headed towards us! You have your bunkers ready yet? Well, good, because you only have about 5 billion years to get ready. Andromeda is believed to have been formed from a galactic collision due to its unconventional spiral shape, which is almost rectangular, with irregular and uneven spiral arms.

Andromeda is interesting for astronomers to study because it is likely that the galaxy formed in a similar way to our own. This trend can be seen in similar star formation, i.e; what the stars are made of, (tend to be made of few heavy-metals,) and the star organization, as the stars are less dense the farther out from the core of the galaxy. Andromeda, like most galaxies, also possesses a supermassive black hole at its heart, though the star cluster surrounding it is so dense, it almost appears as though Andromeda is built around a single star. Other abnormally large structures within the galaxy are believed to be smaller galaxies that were absorbed by Andromeda during collisions, aka, Andromeda's lunch. (Andromeda is apparently like a snake, and takes billions of years to digest its dinner.) And Andromeda is also apparently getting its dinner to go, as it is surrounded by an estimated 14 dwarf galaxies, which are also thought to have been chewed on by Andromeda's tidal forces in the distant past...

Good stuff. Sweet dreams, everyone.

So, it's time for Andromeda dragon! She's pretty slick...a simple design that packs a powerful image - smoothly moving through space, though lined with muscle - beautifully coloured and swooping, though armed with vicious, six-clawed fingers...

Good stuff.

Awesome picture; so simple, yet agressive in posture which reminds us how one day Adromeda will eventually 'eat' the Milky Way...
