Good to hear! And yah, tbh, I did the same thing years back. But once you see it it's like 'Ah hah!'

THANK YOU SOO much for this! I've been looking for something like this for literally years, heck ever since I wanted to become an artist. I'm not kidding in the slightest! I've seen many dragon tutorials but they are never done by pros or people who can even draw. And ones I have seen are almost worthless. I've been drawing a dragon a day for almost a year now and I'm excited to add this to my dragons. their nothing next to yours though, imagination and anatomically speaking.Β
Although I disagree a little on putting the wings behind the arms. Even though it may restrict movement, I always find that to be more ascetically pleasing, just personal taste I assume. But thats just nitpicking. Seriously thank you so much,Β

Ah wow, thanks a lot! I'm really happy to hear that, and hope it helps out!
Yah, there are different schools of thought on the placement of the wings. *shrugs*. I personally think of 'em as having two sets of arms and how the different placements would impact 'em. And tbh, I used to put the wings on top of the front limbs until I had a serious 'Ah hah!' moment, hehe.

Your welcome! Dragons are so cryptic, to me they are the hardest thing to draw because of how little resources their are out there. Β And when I use refs they stop being dragons but become a lizard with wings without character. And it frustrates me to no end that I want them to look realistic but all I can get are cartoony ones. It feels like every one else can get them but me. XD And it feels like most of the info you need it "you gotta be in the know".
Also when I tried studying other artists ways of dragon anatomy I felt I was ripping them off or making fanart when I wanted to make an original character.
Looking through my inspiration folder its interesting that the artists I look up to do both. Just as many times I found wings on top of the arms I'd find wings behind them. To be honest I never never looked out for it because no one ever talked about it, heck I avoided wings 90 percent of the time because I didn't know what to do because of how again, cryptic dragon anatomy is. So I guess I only like how certain artists pull it off, but I will say in some instances it just looks like its too close to the middle of the body which looks like it would off set it, but most put it only slightly behind the arm.

This is a fantastic basic reference guide, I have been looking for a good one that I could easily understand without having to root through too many other guides to get an understanding of the subject I am after. Thank you for this!

Hello there... Your drawings are great, so is this tutorial. I was just thinking.... How much time did you need to draw that well? Because i'm just starting out and i can't manage to draw from imagination... Do you have any tips to train? Sorry for asking all that, but i really want to improve... PS, sorry for my english, not my native language.Β

Thanks! I've been drawing since I could hold a pen. Been doing digital art for about five years now. Just takes a ton of work, work, and more work!

So, how would you draw a dragon with a straight neck instead of curving upward?
π: 0 β©: 1
TwilightSaint In reply to BenDragon1337 [2014-05-02 22:28:37 +0000 UTC]
You would just draw the muscles straighter and more stretched out.

This is astonishingly helpful! I think I may finally be able to draw dragons!!!!!!!!! What's kept me from it is just not knowing how to or where to even start because I know almost nothing about anatomy.
So just for this, you are now my #1 favorite artist!
(Sorry Narse! XD)
