Description A torc inspired from vendel era and early viking-age. Historical accuracy was not the goal with this piece but i believe it could have made some warrior at that time very happy. Raven shaped terminals with garnets for the eyes. The torc weighs just over half a kilogram so its a really solid piece. Materials are brass and bronze. The sword on the picture is for the scale.

It was a custom order. Making such big unique piece is a lot of work so i only make them on commission.

Ah ok. I was actually looking for a raven torc as a commission and was wondering how much you charge in general for a style like that and if it could be a bit more celtic. I have wedding I am going to next year, and we are supposed to come in costumes with themes. The bride and groom and going as Nordic Viking Gods, I am going as the Goddess Morrigan. So I was looking for a torc and came across yours and thought that is perfect and close enough if you do them as commission though I would like to further inquire to you. Since I would be looking for one as such.

Wouldnt it be "bad omen" to go to wedding as Morrigan foretelling doom and death for the newlyweds? It is possible to make the commission but it was a fairly expensive one because of the work involved - the price for a unique one would be around 300 usd. It might be easyer to look around net because if someone has made a mold and sells them in larger quantity the prices may be much more affordable. If you are interested in personalized unique design then offcource you are welcome to ask. I just had an idea of forged and twisted iron torc with cast ravenscull terminals - might look awesome.

I actually contacted to you do to scouring the web because of cost. I even found one less detailed then your own for $800. I would like to have something unique if I going to pay close to $200 to anywhere between $800. "Bad Omen" that is kind of funny, but since there is going be a Tyr and others there nope. I will also be going as her dual aspect that most people overlook as life/fertility. Anyway the Iron sounds interesting, but I am worried how it will hold up with corrosion, and wear over time. It is something I plan to wear regularly. I like the terminals featured on the one I found, but I would love to have something unique. Perhaps a sketch or I could provide a sketch I actually do celtic knotwork as my chosen genre. The only thing I would definitely like present is silver, and if possible depending on price garnet somewhere like eyes or something. If not I can live without that definitely the silver though. My friend who is getting married and I have been looking for a long time, so I will send him to you as well if you don't mind he is looking for custom work as well.

Hehei! The omen part was intended as funny - as myself i am all for roleplay and awesome costumes but some people might be superstitious so it also served as possible warning

Garnets are not a problem. Silver on the other hand would push the pricepoint a lot. The torc on the picture weighed about half a kilogramm so making it from silver would add about 500 euros as material cost.

It would be possible to forge the metal part from stainless steel and add cast silver ravenhead terminals with garnets as eyes - that would be the best compromise i think pricewise.
You may want to google "iron torc" just to get the idea how steel might look. In case you are allergic to nickel there are also more expensive nickel free stainless steels - still much more affordable than making entire torc from silver.

I can carve the terminals after your sketch - i think it might be cool that you can put bit of yourself in the piece.

Ill send you a note with more details.

One thank you for the feedback and I am so sorry I did not communicate that I wanted the silver to be accents like the rope looking wire that was wrapped or on the terminals only. I will look up the Iron Torc and yes I actually am actually sensitive to Nickel. I can have you a drawing of the terminals by Monday. First of the month and all make things a bit hectic.

Wow, you do beautiful work! I've collected several reproductions of historical torcs, and some modern designs, and I've got to say that your piece would hold up supremely well in any setting. You're obviously highly skilled and your craftsmanship really shows through. Lovely!

Did you make that torc or buy it? I've been trying to get my hands on a silver Raven torc for years, but they're all just so damn expensive.

Ugrik In reply to cjl1610 [2014-08-09 08:14:04 +0000 UTC]

I did. Well - from silver that torc would weigh 700 grams so roughly 700 euros worth of material not counting the work that has to go into it.

The bird heads would also look awesome decorating an armring or as a drinking horn terminal!

If you do make a horn terminal based on that design, I would be seriously interested.

You have to convince me that you really-really want it and then you can pay either directly through paypal or i can create a listing in my Etsy shop and start making it.

Great piece. It looks great and like it would be fairly comfortable to wear as well (depending on neck size, of course).

Ugrik In reply to BeardDragonMaille [2013-09-11 19:13:07 +0000 UTC]

It was - as its the first torc i have made i expected it to be much more uncomfortable because its so rigid but it fit well despite the weight.

This is a lovely piece of jewelry.  For most of us artists, some deviation from strict archaeological samples is nearly impossible to avoid.  After all, we are artists, not textbook illustrators...

Anyway I am a contributor for and would like to add this photo to our Jewelry folder.   Good work!

Hehei,

No problem. About the historical authenticity i wanted to point it out because large number of my works are as good replicas as possible, made after certain finds.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

MicheleHansen In reply to Ugrik [2013-09-11 16:00:46 +0000 UTC]

I belong to a website called myarmoury.com because I always ask for feedback on a sketch for a larger piece I am creating.  The admins, and members are extremely well versed concerning historical models.  I always take heat because I am first and artist, not an archaeologist, and my works are creative, not strictly representative.

For one illustration (part of which is my DA ID pic)  I wanted to show a warrior not perfectly fitted out for battle.  This character is a renegade, and would wear whatever hand protection he could find.  From the human standpoint I essay that what is seen in artworks from a period are often idealized images.  In life, we often use whatever is at hand to accomplish a task.  Thus, he is wearing leather gloves, not mitts as would be worn in a more formal battle situation.
