Description
"You are taking me the nicest places, babe." Velkan growled. His yellow eyes shone in the damp darkness of the crypts. "Once, just once, I'd like to go somewhere nice. A beach maybe, but without a sea monster. Or some nice village which hasn't got a dark secret. A hotel which doesn't turn out to be run by a cannibalistic cult. Is that too much to ask for?"
"Are you finished?" Jonathan smirked. His gaze was fixed on the gloomy shadows beyond the light of his candle. A torch would have been preferable but one had to make do with what was available.
"Not even remotely. And what is that smell?"
"Death?"
"I was thinking mildew because of all the water down here."
"Definitely death." Jonathan said.
"You really need to stop enjoying this so much. There is something wrong with you, you know?"
"And that's why you love me."
"Yeah." Velkan admitted after a short pause. "I guess there is something wrong with me, too."

I apologise for the long hiatus. I'm clawing my way back towards DA at the moment. At least it wasn't just my depression which kept me away but a week of intense, almost 24/7 gaming since the new Tomb Raider game came out. Followed by the remake of 2003's "Black Mirror" adventure series which directly inspired this picture.

The lighting in this image is outstanding! Maybe I've said that already but you've got the great skills to make darker images and yet with incredibly well-exposed characters. By the way, I really likeΒ Jonathan. He's my second favorite of you. (First is Tariq).

Thank you so much! Means the world to me. I have a thing for atmospheric images with a lot of darkness and shadows and while it's not always 100% realistic, I love putting my characters in environments like this. It's funny, we're basically polar opposites because most of your images are wonderfully lit and bright and soft, which is something I totally love about your art.Β

I cannot IMAGINE how long this render took with those candles (and Velkan's eyes) as the sole lighting, but it was definitely worth it.
What's your usual maximum sample size?
Gorgeous work as always.Β

Oh, there was more than the candlelight sources. The eyes aren't even emissive, that's all Photoshop The lighting of the actual render (which took 4 1/2h, I need to look up the sample size) was much darker and a bit bland, even though the candle created a nice effect. Everything else happened in PS with tons of layers. The background is a 2D image, I only rendered Jon and Velkan
I had to tweak Jon's expression, too, since I didn't really like the outcome but didn't want to render again. Bless the liquify filter.
Thank you

I'd never have guessed! I really need to get into the habit of rendering in layers, too. I've been working on a piece almost since I started playing in DS and it's ready to render, but it'll take something like 8-9 hours and possibly lock up my PC in the process, which is Not Ideal.

Yeah, I went for something like this once but it annoyed me too much. Reflection and intricate light. Rendered for more than 12h and in the end, I didn't like the outcome. That's the main downside of Daz and its render engine. But the results still look so much better than anything Poser can produce.Β

Right? It's what creates the atmosphere and is the true source of fun.

I have a thing for Velkan's glowing wolf eyes. Maybe not realistic but so hot.
