I was at my wits end about Cara. I couldn’t get her smile out of my mind, but at the same time I was still deeply unsettled by how casually she wore her friends as clothing. Finally I decided I had to talk with someone about her.
Walking into the pool I spotted the twins Lilly and Lizzy, standing by the side of the pool. They were friends of mine, but I knew they were friends of Cara too. Waving, I walked over. “Hey you two, I thought I might find you here.”
“Of course,” Lilly replied, “This is like our second home after all.”
“What brings you out here?” Lizzy asked, “Come to join us for a swim?”
“Maybe in a moment,” I replied, “But first I wanted to ask you about Cara.”
“Oh, Cara’s great,” Lilly said with a smile. “She’s really nice, and super friendly”
“Yeah, she’s got tons of friends,” Lizzy added, “and there’s a reason she does. She really pays attention to and likes everyone. Everyone loves her.
Feeling a bit awkward, I tried to hit at my concern, “Isn’t she a bit eccentric?”
“Sure,” answered Lizzy, “but that’s part of her charm.”
“She likes to do things her own way,” Lilly added in.
“And, the um, turning people into clothes?” I asked, finally asking about what really worried me.
“Oh, that, yeah, that’s something she does.” Lilly explained, “If she figures out what she thinks someone is supposed to be, zap, that’s what they are.”
“Really? I was wondering if she was joking about wearing people.” Having the two of them confirm it shook me, up till now I could believe that maybe Cara was just making fun of me. “Does she ever turn them back?”
“Nope, I’ve never seen her change anyone back,” Lizzy said with a shrug, “If she figures out what someone is supposed to be, then that’s what she thinks they’re supposed to be.”
Lilly must have noticed my worried look. “It’s just something that happens if you are Cara’s friend, you end up seeing her wearing some friends. Really, it’s just something you get used to.”
