Description

Malachi has always been Jonathan's best friend and greatest hero.

While Jonathan got along with his mother just fine, even if Joanna babied him a little too much (just a little), there was no dad better than Dad as far as he was concerned.

But, as it is with every child, this idealistic buck learns there are a few parts of his father, even now, that aren't so ideal.

Oh, sure, Jonathan knew all about Malachi's wild youth and some of Malachi's unsavory roles in the entertainment industry; Malachi never kept those things a secret from anyone in his family. He was honest with Joanna and Gertrude from the start, but both does accepted him anyway because they could see for themselves how he was purposefully changing for the better. Jubal also saw how apologetic he was and was willing (far more willing than Tamara) to rekindle the spark of brotherhood.

What's getting Jonathan down right now is how Malachi doesn't quite agree (yet) about calling Reid Lactantius "family."

All biological differences aside, Jonathan has learned to love Reid, pure and simple, and vice versa. The buck doesn't exaggerate when he tells Caleb, "Reid's been more family than you have been these last few years." He's surprised the word "family" is part of Caleb's vocabulary these days.

It's gotten to the point where Jonathan has shared some deep secrets and very personal traditions with Reid, especially at Christmastime and birthdays. He even asked Reid to be his best man when he married Herminia, and while Reid is unsure about whether he'll marry (or whether the one girl he has his eye on will agree), he most definitely has Jonathan in mind if that ever happens.

Jonathan has been there for Reid when everyone else was having too much fun bullying the poor kid; that was partly what motivated him to befriend the kid in the first place.

Reid was totally supportive of Jonathan and Herminia when everyone else was giving the two fauns grief for "falling in love too fast" and "marrying too soon," not to mention "marrying too far outside your proper station."

Next to Beowulf, Lara, and Uncle Romulus, there's no one Reid cares for more.

Jonathan even approves when Mason Wiles appears on the scene. When Reid strikes up a friendship with the lonely Wiles prince, all Jonathan has to say is, "Well, if Reid likes you, consider yourself a definite keeper!"

While Malachi has never objected to this friendship, he still thinks calling Reid "family" is a bit of a stretch.

And Jonathan's not happy to see that Dad, of all people, still carries a few stains of prejudice to this day.
