Description
Trying to approach the more artistic shots of metalwork. This is a tower of stacked patches of chainmaille. 8 by 4 of euro 4-1, 11 patches high now. These'll be implemented in a future project, as soon as I decide what that'll be.
(ring ID is 5 mm and gauge is 1,3 mm)

ehm, ik had een bende van die lapjes gemaakt, en merkte dat je ze zo op kon stapelen. toen heb ik van die stapel een paar foto's gemaakt, en deze lage hoek kwam er het beste uit ^^
(en bedankt ^^)

they are very closely closed. How do you manage to cut them so precisely?

Well, I use a solid mandrill in a handdrill (battery powered) with it I wind coils of half a meter long.
I clamp that into a tabletop vise [link] Then I saw the coil open with a hacksaw [link] using my one hand to hold down the vice, and the index finger of that hand to guide the back of the saw blade. It delivers a straight cut about 1 mm across.
Each ring is then bent 3 times. Once to align the ends on a single workplane, once horizontally to bring em together, and once vertically on each end to bring them down into a circle.
Then I remove any burrs ,that remained after tumbling the freshly cut rings, with my flat-nose-plier (I use a ricegrain tumbler, works well ^^

good plan to make your shots more artistic. well done. that's a lot of mail though holy crap. eleven pieces... that's a lot of rings

^^ oeh, and thank you for complementing on my picture ^^
it took some tinkering with the lights to get it right

54 rings per patch, so thatΒ΄d be 594 rings total

holy damn, that's a lot of rings. probably what... three poinds in weight? maybe four? it must have taken some doing to get the lighting right. metal can be so difficult. too much and you've got too much shine, not enough and it doesn't shine. so what is this eventually going to become? a shirt?

I haven't weighed them yet. Though there is some weight to it yes. However, I doubt it'd be that much.
the lighting wasa bitch yeah, I must have taken about 13 shots to get it right, but using a bright lightscourse, not aimed directly at the metal, and turning off flash, works reasonably well.
Haha, I did get SDragon suggesting to make a shirt, and I would like to, but it'd take me 2 years to finish at this rate.
it's most likely going to be part of a plate/chain hybrid armor

oh that might be interesting to see. there are lots of great references for sure to be found. if you're making armor to be worn you'll want a gambison too.

you mean one of those padded suits?
I had thought of that, but I think that lining the inside of each panel with soundproofing foam will actually work better. Like with the gauntlet I design off the body, which makes the armor build-up a lot different. more like an exoskeleton.
that slender build makes it more agile, but takes space needed for a gambison. So I figured I'd use local padding in stead of a second suit
(also, I'm too lazy to make one )

ok, well as long as you have a plan for some form of padding between your body and the steel. good luck with that. I expect photos! lol

and photos will come, as soon as i pick up the project to the next level
(oh, and I'm planing on using composites, not steel )

And the camera shot is very nice.

and thanks for the compliment

Very interesting way of taking a photo of the maille. I think they should be implemented into making a glove or shirt for yourself if you haven't done so already.

have got a bracelet, don't really wanna do a shirt, cause that'll take me 2 years at this rate.
But I'll try to keep poppin out one of these each day, so I can build a huge stack
and thanks for liking the shot ^^

haha, unfortunately, sweatshops arent legal here (and I don't have a lot of chainmaille orientated friends close by to pitch in)
it's most likely going to be part of a plate/chain hybrid armor. Like the frock under a tasset or on the back of a helmet (like my helmet already has)
have been working on the concept of making armor from composite material, but forming seems to be trickier than I'd hoped.

Yeah I suppose. I know if I were closer to yeah I would help out in making it lol. I may need to learn a pattern or two but I would help in a heart beat.

haha thanks, If I could summon you to help me out, youΒ΄d be the first IΒ΄d ask ^^
Then again, I think if I Could call in help, IΒ΄d make the project more ambiguous, and still be taking hella long XD
