It reminds me of what happened with Jaws 3, and Spy Kids 3. They just tried to shove in as many random 3D scenes as they could because they thought 3D was cool at the time.

Amazing how it's become so much more widely available now, and 3D isn't so much of a big thing anymore.

Not only that, I'd imagine that people would go to 3D movies expecting their money's worth of in-your-face 3D stuff; you could really tell when Friday the 13th Part 3 was trying to compensate them, so to speak. However, though I joked about it in the comic, Part 3 did it in a way that didn't feel like the whole film was ground to a halt whenever that happened (like your example, Spy Kids 3... and I haven't seen Jaws 3 yet, I'll have to keep my eyes peeled-- and 3D glasses on-- for that. ).

And I agree, it truly is amazing how much 3D in movies has evolved now, I believe that has to do in part with the industry evolving... More film creators are realizing (now that special effects are more easily created) that stuff that looks cool in 3D can be woven into the fabric of the movie even more subtly than Ft13P3, rather than being unceremoniously dunked into rubber cement, slapped on, and praying that it sticks.
