Good news Derpy Fans! The DVD that came out that has five episodes in it has the episode where Derpy speaks AND they kept her the way we like! Rainbow Dash still calls her by name, her eyes are still adorably cross-eyed and her awesome voice.

Hey, one question: is Derpy an actual character of MLP?

That very question is one of the things that got me into this fandom. She has quite a fascinating story behind her, in terms of how she came to be such a popular character.

What exactly is her story? I've always been curious. she's definitely a lovable character I just wanted to know why almost every mlp fan loves her.

Well, her very first appearance was in the pilot episode, during Pinkie's welcome party for Twilight. She was just standing there in the background, but for some reason her eyes were "derped," one up and one down. I've heard it said that here eyes were an animation error that was allowed to stay in because someone thought it looked funny. Anyway, when the show started to get famous on 4chan, someone spotted her back there and was like, "What's up with that weird expression on that background pony?" She even had bubbles as a cutie mark, how adorable is that? A few comments later the name Derpy Hooves was born! She was spotted in the background on later episodes, and so people made it a point to find her wherever she was hiding. Artwork of her began to show up everywhere, and she eventually became so famous that the people in charge of the show itself took notice. Starting with episode 15, they began to derp her eyes intentionally as a gesture to all us crazy fans. Needless to say, that did not go unappreciated!
She also had a very particular scene in season one, where she and another pegasus dropped several objects on Twilight while in the employ of a shipping company. That's where the concept of her as a mailpony came from.
Her love for muffins comes from the episode Applebuck Season, where AJ and Pinkie made bad muffins. She was one of three ponies mouthing the distinctly audible line "Muuuuuffiiiinns."
She was also given a daughter by the fans, "Dinky Hooves" (also called "Dinky Doo," after the other name Derpy has gone by, "Ditzy Doo). This little unicorn was only given such a position because she looked quite a bit like Derpy herself.
For no reason I can find in the show, she has frequently appeared in the fandom's stories as interacting somehow with "Dr. Whooves," another fan-favorite. Sometimes they are shipped together. She WAS seen talking to him on a bridge in the Hearts and Hooves Day episode.
Much later, Dinky appeared with Sparkler (also called Amethyst Star in the toy line) in the Sisterhooves Social event in the show, with Derpy watching from the audience. This gave us ammunition to say that she also had Sparkler as a teenaged daughter! Fun stuff.
Her fame grew and grew, and when Jayson took the show over for Lauren, he told the bronies that Derpy had been given scripted cameos all throughout season 2. Talk about #winning.
Her derpy moments, like her odd paper bag costume in Nightmare night, made her more famous and popular than ever. Then, the unthinkable happened. Derpygate!
In The Last Roundup episode, Derpy was actually given her own lines, and was literally named Derpy by Rainbow Dash. Fan's rejoicing could be heard from here to Antarctica. I know, I was one of them. But then, strange things began to happen. Someone got wind that a few negative emails were sent to Derpy's VA, and some hate mail was also sent to the scriptwriter and Hasbro, calling them ableist and making fun of mentally disabled people. How they came to that conclusion from such an innocent scene, who knows. The episode was quickly pulled from iTunes, despite the fact that the overwhelming majority of viewers found absolutely nothing wrong with the scene. There was a lot of confusion in those days, but last week the episode finally returned to iTunes, with several distinct changes: Derpy's name was removed, her eyes un-derped, and her voice changed to not sound as goofy.
Needless to say, this didn't go over too well with tens of thousands of fans, including people who have mental disability, even some who have the same eye condition.
It was confirmed that the change was made to avoid offending people, which would be perfectly fine if it weren't for the fact that nearly all who saw the scene said there was never anything about her that needed "fixing."
At any rate, Kreoss, one of the animators to the show, has declared that Derpy will continue to appear, at least in that "where's waldo" kind of way that she used to do.
And that, in a nutshell, is the tall tale of our well-beloved, muffin-munching, unicorn-raising, time-travelling, cross-eyed, tear-jerking, happy little mare!
