Description The picture doesn't do this project justice.

This is the huge project I've had under wraps for a while, which I called Operation BIGBARK. This is by far the most complex crochet piece I've done to date, because it is a lot more complexity than it looks to have. I got the idea when I went back to play Super Mario 64 one day, and thought he'd be perfect to make a playset of.

The chain is fully detachable from the grass, and the entire thing is made of yarn. I worked on it over small sections of two or three weeks. Most of the stitches are either single or double.

Chomp himself is about six inches in diameter, and about six inches tall as well and the eyes and pupils were made as separate pieces. The chain is close to a foot and each link was made as a separate piece. The grass is over a foot on each side, and the log is about 2 inches tall.

He was supposed to have a mouth, but I spent weeks fighting with the mouth to no success. Either way, I still love how he looks.

I give , and permission to post this in their club.

Thanks! He's pretty big too. I think he's somewhere between eight and ten inches tall.

I don't know why, but Chain Chomp was always one of my favorite Mario creatures. I definitely need to redo this guy with a mouth sometime soon.

I got some of the craziest questions about him while I made him in school.

My fav Mario creature was always Lakitu. I don't know, I kind of see him as a wuss who compensates by staying out of reach and throwing near-invincible guys at you.

Actually, between the two of them, you kinda get polar opposites. That makes me think of a lakitu with a pet chain chomp...

Lakitu drove me nuts in Super Mario 64 half the time. Although I will admit I did like him as a creature.

That would make an interesting picture to see, and I can imagine it happening. If I didn't have three plushies to do, I consider making one.

VanillaAcolytes In reply to Eevee-no-Sakura [2008-06-01 21:05:23 +0000 UTC]

Thank you!

It's a bit hard to explain depending on whether you crochet or not, but I found him pretty easy. All I did was make a spherical shape for the body, which is pretty simple when you know how to do it. The eyes are just flattened circles, and the links are straight crochetted lines hooked together like those decorations little kids make. And the grass is just plain double stitching.

If you know crochet terms, let me know and I can give you a better explanation.

I'm glad you liked it.

wow! no I didn't know that way of make plushies is called crochet, that's what I wanted to know -the name- ^^ , but I couldn't ask correctly because I don't speak or write xD english pretty well

thank you ^^

VanillaAcolytes In reply to Eevee-no-Sakura [2008-06-01 22:36:54 +0000 UTC]

Well, crochet is a term used for a type of stitching with a special needle. A lot of times you see scarfs and stuff that are crochet, but I decided to do something different and make plushies with it.

It's perfectly fine! If what I'm saying is too confusing, let me know. I'm an English major in college, so I accidently type some things more wordy than they should be.

Thank you! The chain was actually quite simple. Just a bunch of straight stitched lines attached together. Kind of like those paper ring chains kids tend to make.

Ah, right. Well, I'm completely clueless when it comes to knitting/crocheting/a lot of things actually, so anything like this amazes me XD

It's all right, it was the same for me before I started crocheting. Then again, it's that way with everything. If you can't do it, it looks amazing, if you can, it looks easy, lol.

VanillaAcolytes In reply to WoWKrynne [2007-11-14 20:56:58 +0000 UTC]

Yea, I had to do out straight lines for the chain links, one by one, then attach them together. Making the links was easy, but attaching them together and to the Chomp was a pain.

I've actually considered selling some of my work, but figured a. No one would buy it, and b. I had no clue about how much to sell it for. Especially with this Chain Chomp, since it hands down came out as one of my best pieces.

milliways In reply to VanillaAcolytes [2007-10-02 13:06:17 +0000 UTC]

You don't have to sell online, is one thing you have to remind yourself. Depending on how much you've made that you'd be willing to sell, it's always worth seeing if any craft fairs are being held in your local area, and whether or not pitches are avilable for people to sell goods. But I live in the UK, and stuff like that happens all the time, so I'm not sure how the US is with that sort of thing.

What a cute pair of eyes! Looks even cuter than the mouth-opening official version.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

VanillaAcolytes In reply to Eledora [2007-09-24 11:51:25 +0000 UTC]

Thank you! The eyes may look simplistic, but it actually took me a lot of work to try to get each layer to pop out on the next. And attaching them was my worst nightmare, lol. Kids in school were giving me the weirdest looks. But I like how the came out in the end.

I'm still conflicted about the mouth, because he's not really Chain Chomp without it.

Eledora In reply to VanillaAcolytes [2007-09-24 12:33:34 +0000 UTC]

Perhaps you could make a 2-D mouth for it, then fix it to its head? Then you could switch it from two versions.

VanillaAcolytes In reply to KHalfkey [2007-09-24 11:49:17 +0000 UTC]

I tried like five different ways, and nothing came out right. He has a Pac-Man like mouth, and the only way to replicate that would be felt, and last time I used felt, it weirded itself out.

I will think of something though, and I'll repost him when he's fixed.
