Hi Gracie, my fellow Canadian. Your journal entry made me sad. I know that Japanese culture puts a lot of value on politeness and yes, by Japanese standards, Canadians may seem less cultivated, socially, in this regard. You're trapped between two cultures, a very common thing. But I hope you don't let it all get you down; don't let it defeat you. You're a stunningly beautiful young woman with friends and, clearly, talent. Take heart from these things. And, clearly, judging by their comments, you have more friends here on DA!

Lots of people are. I recently had an intense 7-week email correspondence with a woman who might also be considered "an emotional trainwreck." It ended, but not by my choice, and I find myself still caring about her deeply. I find I can't be mad at her. She needs something better than that. Sometimes it's just one of life's phases; phases end. Hold on.
