Description
I am really sorry guys I have been saying I will get this up for the longest time. I had the images and everything ready but my PS skills weren't and aren't that great but I am finally at a point where I was able to get this together myself. Sorry if it doesn't look that great and if anyone sees any mistakes let me know. This is the first part of how to sew a fully lined replica Kimono for costume and cosplay. This first part covers the sleeve construction. Same method applies for the long furisode sleeves, add length but the dots and sewing marks will remain the same.
While drafting of a kimono is not complicated I recommend purchasing Simplicity Pattern 4080. I will not include in this tutorial how to draft and make sewing marks, so go out and buy the patten it will make life a lot easier. You can get it as low as $0.99 when there are pattern sales.

There must be an issue with my pattern as the 'dots' are on opposite sides of each other not the same side. Β The side with the curved corner has one dot and a double dart, while the other side has one dot and one dart. Β I have no idea how far down to sew. Β Advice/Suggestions?

I suppose so, its just shows you how you can line such garments but you can do the steps in the order that suits you best. It changes for me depending on the piece.

I love simplicity patterns! I actually used that pattern to make a kimono. First time for everything. I picked the wrong fabric (or the right fabric for the wrong type of outfit), and ended up sewing on a sleeve wrong. I couldn't exactly correct it, seeing as how I finished it two hours before I was picked up for AMKE 2011. XD
Anyway, I'll be remaking it eventually, but it's nice to see other people posting things like these to help those who need more visual evidence when making things.

Thanks for making this, I've used this pattern before and I can see how it could be confusing for people. Maybe next time make it with a different colored lining so people can follow easier?

VariaK In reply to PaXingCai [2011-12-10 16:46:07 +0000 UTC]
True I could but at the time I was either making all red or all white pieces but when I make something where lining is different color I'll replace pictures. Thanks for suggestion

This is a nice posting for those who don't know how to do this. I have a great book on making yukata from Japan that works nicely, but of course, most people who want to make their own kimono don't read Japanese.
Excellent how-to.

Oh thank you, I actually first started making it just for myself so I can get though making these things quickly and figured I would share. I actually haven't tried making a yukata but I am obsessed with lining everything.

I've only made a doll sized lined kimono so far. Doll sizes are fun to work with for practice. I'll have to remember your tutorial if I ever get really gutsy and buy a kimono bolt.

Plus, even I need the help remember the steps for lining (which of course aren't in a book on yukata).

This is very nice! Thanks for adding it!
I will be honest and say that it looks complex so I might have to try on scrap fabric first.

Once you get started and if you take your time, you can't mess it up. My practice one actually turned out almost perfect I was surprised so go for it, don't be intimidated.
