For 's contest entry. So glad I was able to get this done before the due date! So much worry, but I gotta say, this really helped me get over my problem with backgrounds. I feel so much more confident with backgrounds. References are fantastic.

Looking through your list of next gens, I saw that Piper was a child of Tirek and I couldn't help but draw her with mine. Now I have a love for Piper and I just hope I got her character right ^^'

Now for the story!

There the beast was. It was at the shoreline waiting to take a drink from the refreshing lake. The massive head looked around, trying to see if it could sense any danger in the area. Once it decided there wasn’t any danger nearby, it leaned down and began to take a drink; this is when the hunter took her mark on the beast. The centaur reached behind her and drew an arrow from her quiver. She gave pause as the beast stopped a moment, hearing the noise. Carefully, she nocked the arrow, waiting for the right moment. The creature finished quenching its thirst. This was her moment. As the bow silently drew back, her left eye lit up with an icy blue. The crystal arrowhead shone as a solid layer of ice surrounded it. Surely it would penetrate the beast’s thick hide. The beast turned to walk back into the forest. In this moment, she let the arrow loose. It sped through the air and penetrated the thick skull of the beast. Another gleam from across the way flew towards the beast as well. The creature gave a momentary pained groan before dropping to the ground on its side.

Sagittarius felt a bit of satisfaction seeing the beast fall, but the other gleam gave her a sense of worry. She stepped out of the brush to observe her prize. However, another creature stepped out on the other side of the path. Both of them paused seeing each other. Sagittarius hung her bow and quiver on a bare branch before stepping forward more. The minotaur did the same, setting her crossbow to the side.

“Don’t tell me you're here to claim this beast,” Piper said with a slight hint of anger in her voice.

Sagittarius walked up to her arrow sticking out of the skull and gripped it. “I figured that was obvious.” She bent her body down to pull the arrow out of the skull, hoping the crystal arrowhead was still intact. Sagittarius’ eye returned to the normal blue as the element faded.

Piper felt a flare rise in her. “Listen here, I’ve been hunting this beast for days. I am not going to let you take this bounty from me.”

Sagittarius pulled out the arrow and gave it a look over. The arrowhead was still whole. “Bounty? There’s a bounty on this beast?”

“Yes, there is.” She paused a moment in consideration. “You’re not here for the bounty?”

“I hunt as a hobby. I take them as trophies and sell the meat off to gryphons and dragons.”

“That’s all?”

Sagittarius nodded. An idea popped in her head. “What happens to the beast when you get the pay?”

“The job posters usually take it since I have no use for it.” She pondered for a moment, thinking over that question. “I think I know what you’re getting at. How much do you get for the meat?”

“Depends on the quality. I would say the better quality would get me a gold or two per pound. How much is your bounty worth?”

“300 gold. You’re probably going to get more out of it with the meat.”

“How would you feel about splitting the entire profit?” She retrieved her bow and quiver and put them around her back.

“I wouldn’t disagree to that.” She looked down at the blood seeping into the sand and washed away by the water. “I don’t think I’m getting my bolt back.” The minotaur went to retrieve her crossbow from the side.

“I’ll bring my cart around.”

“By the way,” she walked to the centaur and held out her hand. “Name’s Piper.”

Sagittarius took hers in return. “Sagittarius. It’s nice to meet you.”
