Description
Note: Due to other things going on in my life (work, cars, video games, hanging out with friends, etc), work on this project has essentially ceased. The Super Turbo Tango Patcher is a mostly self-explanatory graphical wizard designed to make simple the process of modifying your system files with resources developed and inspired by the Tango Desktop Project. It currently includes implementations of the basic Tango icon set, the Tangerine icon set developed by the Ubuntu art team, the Industrial icon set from recent SUSE/Novell desktop Linux releases, and the Gnome icon theme, rounded out with various pieces of artwork created by myself and others. Additionally, it includes a reloader module to re-modify your files if they are overwritten, allowing system updates to be performed without breaking the theme. If you experience issues with the Patcher, please consult the included documentation.
It is designed to work on all language versions and editions of Windows XP and Server 2003. 64-bit versions of Windows are NOT supported.
As this is DeviantArt, your feedback, good or bad, will make this beast all the better. Many thanks to those who've volunteered opinions, chances are you either helped development along, or incremented by one my ego counter
Last update (2008/06/15): Split the applications portion out into a separate patcher, since it'll work just fine on Vista, and even X64 (providing you haven't gone and found special 64-bit versions of things), replaced my crappy WiMP icon with the icon from Totem, add comctl32.dll locations for SP3, work around the multiple-notepad.exe business in a better way, optionally extract source code to the patcher directory, added /bootsplash=[0=off|1=on] command-line parameter, and check for Vista and don't run on it.
Note that applications are no longer included in the "system" patcher - they have been moved into a separate package, available here .
If you receive a warning from your antivirus program about WFPdisable.exe, it is safe to ignore. Because of what the program does (disables WFP, which will complain about and attempt to undo changes system files), your AV software likely considers it dangerous. It's technically not a false positive per se, since it's correctly detecting what it is and acting appropriately, but WFP is re-enabled after a reboot, and it reduces the number of complaints from WFP dialogs (so I can't win - it's either complaints about WFP dialogs or complaints about antivirus detection.)
If you're using Windows Vista, you maybe be interested in STTP 6000 .

It will be, even if it's just to add new comctl32.dll locations.

Installed on a fresh install of XP, and now all folders in the Start Menu, and folders that aren't empty show an orange question mark diamond.
This is so annoying, and odd since I've installed this numerous times before, and have never had this problem... What happened?

vertigosity In reply to jaymoon85 [2007-12-16 04:50:14 +0000 UTC]
It's by design. The orange diamonds are the icon for categories/application-other, although it makes a lot more sense in GIT2 with the boxes full of random junk.

Not sure what happened in the most recent update, but until it's fixed, 7.05 is fine with me.

Windows has the functionality built-in:
Go to the customize tab of the properties dialog, and click on "change icon."

Hi,
I have no important improvements to suggest for your pack, because it's just perfect!
Just two things:
1. Could you please add just 2 icons for 'Map/unmap network drive'? These buttons are not included in explorers' default toolbar, but I always add them, and they seem sooo ugly in between those great patched icons...
2. It would be nice if we had an option to create a Tango'ed ISO for Windows (like the one in XPize).
Thanks for your great work

I might consider it.
I'm pretty short on time these days and way over-comitted as it is, but if I've got anything to submit, it seems like a nifty idea - and if nothing else, STTP is pretty much already a core part of this little game of yours

Thanks a lot, I know what you mean about time, these days it's a luxury. You're right about being a core part...it' pretty well the inspiration for the whole project. With it we are way ahead of the game. It would be awesome to have you on board. There's been interest shown by others already...keep up the amazing work....

Great work! I love this package!
One thing, though: I'm using the Gnome flavor and it set all of my video file icons to the one from the "categories" folder (applications-multimedia.ico) rather than the one from the "mimetypes" folder (video-x-generic.ico). Previous versions never did this.
It's a minor thing and I can live with it, but I just wanted to give you a heads up!

Nice Work! I was tired of my comp's old look. I'm running into a spot of trouble though. after installation, my computer reloads (as it normally should) but then when it boots up again STTP says that one file needs reloading, and so I have to reboot again. It still tells me that this one file needs reloading. I went to the reloader in the STTP folder and after it reloads the file it tells me that if one files needs constant reloading it could be a failure in resource replacement.
Anybody know what I should do?

Which file is it?
If it's wuauclt.exe, I probably need to go ahead and acknowledge that the patcher's doing The Wrong Thing with that file, and fix it. If it's something else, pop open the help file, and see if it can give you enough information to fix / report it.

Er... to be more specific:
In a legal sense? Well... I've tried to account for most everything under either a blanket statement that it contains something from so-and-so, and/or storing stuff in a directory containing the artist's email address or handle.
In a technical sense? Badly. To really do it properly, it'd need some heavy-duty file-tracking code and/or some stuff to rewrite reshack scripts based on what's available in whichever theme is selected (I think I have a better idea started in STTP 6000, but it's not really entirely fleshed out). As it is, all the icons are arranged in the same directory structure, and they inherit or override per theme by using the same path/filename, regardless of actual ownership.

klepas In reply to vertigosity [2007-09-13 05:14:29 +0000 UTC]
*nod*
Most of us are fairly relaxed about it I think; we're pretty happy to see the tango style making it's way onto the Windows desktop.
I can't see an issue so long as it's all free in one sense or another, and hey, if someone complains you can always make changes before the bullets start flying.
Keep up the awesome work.

Look in the help file's troubleshooting section under the heading appropriately named for your issue, and let me know what you turn up.

Not sure what the problem is ..

I'm not entirely sure what's causing that - I'm seeing that behavior myself on some of my machines, but that includes my clean-but-patched pre-Tango XP VM. I suspect it could be IE7, or something related, but don't hold me to that statement.

"Super Turbo Turkey Puncher!!!"
Way cool, but just didn't feel quite right, so I had to uninstall.
You need to make a better uninstaller O,o
Perhaps have it create backups of the default system files? And then re-apply from those upon uninstalling? Because uninstalling sent my PC on an utter wobley. A repair install was necessary, but there are still 2 or 3 tango icons lurking around here and there Β¬_Β¬

vertigosity In reply to OverdoseDelusion [2007-08-15 04:24:54 +0000 UTC]
Haha... I was wondering when someone would catch the origin of the name
It does (did? (didn't?)) keep backups of the original system files, but that apparently didn't work. Why? No idea. I'd need access to your system or one that the bug can be reproduced on to debug it, so that'll just have to stay a mystery.
