Description
Note: Due to other things going on in my life (work, cars, video games, hanging out with friends, etc), work on this project has essentially ceased. The Super Turbo Tango Patcher is a mostly self-explanatory graphical wizard designed to make simple the process of modifying your system files with resources developed and inspired by the Tango Desktop Project. It currently includes implementations of the basic Tango icon set, the Tangerine icon set developed by the Ubuntu art team, the Industrial icon set from recent SUSE/Novell desktop Linux releases, and the Gnome icon theme, rounded out with various pieces of artwork created by myself and others. Additionally, it includes a reloader module to re-modify your files if they are overwritten, allowing system updates to be performed without breaking the theme. If you experience issues with the Patcher, please consult the included documentation.
It is designed to work on all language versions and editions of Windows XP and Server 2003. 64-bit versions of Windows are NOT supported.
As this is DeviantArt, your feedback, good or bad, will make this beast all the better. Many thanks to those who've volunteered opinions, chances are you either helped development along, or incremented by one my ego counter
Last update (2008/06/15): Split the applications portion out into a separate patcher, since it'll work just fine on Vista, and even X64 (providing you haven't gone and found special 64-bit versions of things), replaced my crappy WiMP icon with the icon from Totem, add comctl32.dll locations for SP3, work around the multiple-notepad.exe business in a better way, optionally extract source code to the patcher directory, added /bootsplash=[0=off|1=on] command-line parameter, and check for Vista and don't run on it.
Note that applications are no longer included in the "system" patcher - they have been moved into a separate package, available here .
If you receive a warning from your antivirus program about WFPdisable.exe, it is safe to ignore. Because of what the program does (disables WFP, which will complain about and attempt to undo changes system files), your AV software likely considers it dangerous. It's technically not a false positive per se, since it's correctly detecting what it is and acting appropriately, but WFP is re-enabled after a reboot, and it reduces the number of complaints from WFP dialogs (so I can't win - it's either complaints about WFP dialogs or complaints about antivirus detection.)
If you're using Windows Vista, you maybe be interested in STTP 6000 .

Well, it said it was backing up so I assumed all was well, but when It attempted the restoration, windows wouldn't boot past the desktop, so I'm assuming that the backup's had become corrupt maybe? I might try it again with a future revision, as it is a really good concept

Hey! Cool concept!
Is there any way to change the icons in the patch?

There is, but at the moment I don't have documentation for how to do it up anywhere. Check back in a few days, I'm planning a new release of the patcher with all of its documentation included, instead including a link to a web page (which recently went down).

Stick with Tango guys. Nothing looks better on a PC than Tango or Gant3. These Tango icons are absolutely incredible. Job extremely well done. Hopefully you won't abandon this project but continue to update this with more icons that could be included to eventually replace every single icon in Windows XP.

This is the best package on the planet, I couldn't imagine staring at another 'xp' icon again. Thanks for the hard work. Without this theme I likely wouldn't have started my own...

Very nice, indeed.
The only thing I miss are the original drapper drake/edgy eft human icons, as I don't like the tango-icons very much
Okay this one is called "Super Turbo Tango Patcher" but it would be very nice to have a "Super Turbo Human Patcher" too

Hey I need help.
Since I'm using tango patcher I never noticed in the installation that it has a tango Opera Browser icon. The problem is it NEVER installed such icon. Anyone have the same problem?
My Opera icon always looks as the original icon and I wanted to use the Tango one - although I have no idea how it looks like.
My Opera is installed in the regular destination (Program Files\Opera)

vertigosity In reply to sumowski [2007-03-21 04:23:56 +0000 UTC]
All it does is copy the icon to Opera's directory, and set a line in the INI file. Depend on how Opera is configured, or if they've changed things, that INI file might be in a different place, I guess... I'll have to look into it. The Opera binary itself is unmodifiable, because they used an executable compressor on it.

ok i have one question: doest this installer "inject" the icons into the dlls or totally replaces them? because i have my win install up to date (to feb hotfixes) and wouldn't like to replace my dlls with older versions. thanks. nice work BTW

vertigosity In reply to insaneone01 [2007-03-11 23:44:12 +0000 UTC]
Yeah, "inject" is actually a pretty good way to describe it; and that is what it does.

Rhapsody (Pre-OS 10) had scales up to 48 I guess, they're a combination of OS 9's and NeXT's. The idea of working on Mac Classic is to achieve a look similar to those in the movies. I remember a while back, I was working on a set to emulate the GUI of an OS Mystique used, as seen in X-Men. You remember this scene when she was printing out some IDs?
I'm ready for action, If you're up for a new pack, let's keep on contact. And it doesn't have to belong to Tango anyway. I'll be collecting and porting icons, cursors and sounds, and you do handle the assignments and the installer. (I probably could come in handy at this, too). if we agree and feel nice about any of the 2, Rhapsody or Mac Classic.

I keep thinking I will, but I've been pretty busy lately, and I keep stalling on it. I don't have any new subskins lined up; are you proposing one ?

ksaad In reply to vertigosity [2007-03-08 04:09:08 +0000 UTC]
I really don't know, I mean we still want this Tango-related, yeah? I've always wanted Mac OS 7 icons and sounds in Windows! I know it's retarded, but classics are nice, simple and neat.
Anyway, guess I have some updates for the next release:
- Cursors (Like xFree, Fedora, X11)
- "Add/Remove Programs and Control Panel" have un-patched icons.
- Sounds maybe?
I used to have plenty of ideas on mind, well; if you don't mind, I would send you a note sometime with many other ideas.

Oh yeah, Classic MacOS rocked. I actually thought about doing that a while back, but I couldn't be arsed to pull my old SE/30 out of storage to get a Mac ROM for an emulator, and I ended up starting on Gnome instead.
I've always wanted to avoid doing cursors and sounds; they're not intrinsically linked to the icon set in any way, and they're easy enough to do. Maybe if I was actually reshacking the default system cursors, there's an idea A lot of the icons I haven't touched, I know about - there just isn't a good analog for them in OSS, and/or they're using a non-Tango icon for them anyways.

ksaad In reply to vertigosity [2007-03-10 03:53:39 +0000 UTC]
We'll miss a lotta icons too if we start on Mac Classic. I mean, even Mac OS 9 doesn't have all the stuff that's already out there in Tango.

For that matter, did MacOS Pre-10 even have any icon sizes other than 16x16 and 32x32?
