Oh ho, man oh man, am I happy with this one.
So the story goes...last summer, Mr. Chris Sanders started a tutorial project just for us deviantArt folks, and went into extremely deep detail of just how much hard work and planning goes into every image he makes. We got a glimpse into his methods, his madness, his psychology, everything. We got an exclusive lesson from the man himself, mister 'I made Lilo and Stitch,' mister 'hope you also enjoyed How To Train Your Dragon.'
But as is the case with many people in his position, duty calls. The front lines of storyboards and light boxes summoned him to Hollywood no man's land where, aside from the occasional letter we receive from the front, we can only assume he is battling full force into delivering another phenomenal blockbuster ass-kicker to us. Lo, the tutorial stopped just after the inking phase, right when he got to my territory. Painting.
I'm a huge fan of his work, and doubly a fan of his willingness to teach us his sacred ways. So to thank him for the tutorial, I decided to try my own hand at painting on his image.
Really hope you like it, sir! The tutorial was a real inspiration, a true testament to what makes you the best, and how we newbies still have a loooooong way to go before achieving your level or artistic enlightenment!

Wow, what a read. For some reason I thought this would be an open tutorial but after reading your description.. it sounds more personal between a group of people. The work you've done, I think, is wonderful and funny. I good mixture of characters as well as idea's from certain films are incorporated in this picture to which I'm adoring.
So! who's flying this thing? (lol)

Well, that's not up for me. I gave my word to Mr. Sanders that I wouldn't capitalize off of this image, and use it just for my own practice. So, no poster unfortunately, and this is as high resolution I'll post it.

Yea I know I am very impressed how you made the image pop out more with the way you fleshed out the characters. I am also working on coloring the lineart but I am still learning things in photoshop. I can always do an 8.5 by 11 print out for my wall. ♥♥♥♥

Brilliant work on the colouring. Especially on the cat suit with it's metallic-paint/glittery effect. And the extra detail with the birds feathers and the blonde's hair.

I too am quite fond of how that hair turned out. Totally new technique for me, too, completely different from what I usually do, and I'm probably going to keep exploring it.

Cool, a different background and character costumes too!! Cause in Chris Sanders' 4th sketchbook, the background and character's costumes were different. Very cute!!!!!!

The problem with my tutorial is how schizophrenic it is. I don't have a definitive approach for doing every single image, I just have little techniques and tricks. So the most I can do is convert my Internet laptop into a work PC and make a livestream session for others to drop in on.

This is awesome. From the shading, to the lighting to the reflection angles, it's amazing. And, I envy the fact you received a lesson from someone so skilled.

Actually, the lesson is available for everybody if you just go to his gallery and check the 'tutorial' sub-folder.

The colors are fantastic as usual but the texturing and care in the materials and fur/feathers is outstanding!

this is a really great image, you definitely honor Mr. Saunders, and you made me wanna watch those movies again=]
since you said criticism honored, I only have one question/crit. I understand the main light source is the moon, so with that being the focus of the light to shadow, wouldn't most of the things on the other side of the light source be much darker? It seems as though you've made the light source affect the opposite side of the things affected by it such as the objects right where the moon is in the space of the picture plane. I would think that the outside of those objects would be the brightest kinda like a halo affect, while the sides that are directly on the opposite side of the light source would be darker. You did that with the skull and also with the pumpkin really well. I also like the way you handled the lower bodies of the girls as well, there are some really rich colors that you've included within those areas.
Great piece david, i look forward to another piece from ya=]

I'm guessing `vest added the moon in later to give the bg some interest after the colouring was pretty much done

you can tell that the moon wasn't an afterthought by how the characters are lit.

vest In reply to thelearningcurv [2011-04-22 03:59:10 +0000 UTC]
Actually, lol, it was. I knew there was going to be a strong light source behind them, but it was just going to be implied moonlight. I didn't intend to put the moon itself, especially that large, when I first shaded and lit the characters. But I put the moon in anyway like that to separate the characters from the other objects, make them stand out, and make them a more definitive focal point.

Wouldn't the lighting still be a bit different on the area that isn't receiving the light?

vest In reply to thelearningcurv [2011-04-22 18:13:27 +0000 UTC]
Yep, but it wouldn't realistically be as intense as it is. That lighting would just be ambient from the rest of the sky, and not be very bright. It would be very desaturated and cool. I'm cheating to make it warmer, not for the sake of realism, but just to make the image look more appealing.

gotcha.... I try to be too realistic sometimes so when I see something that's not so, I tend to bug out a lil

The colours are no doubt awesome, but it's pretty heavily front lit considering the massive moon in the bg. I'd like to see a version with just the moon as a lightsource.

vest In reply to JoshClarkeDraws [2011-04-22 03:56:02 +0000 UTC]
Hmm, an interesting idea. Well, honestly, the moon was an afterthought, I didn't put it in until I decided I needed a binding element to separate the girls from the familiars and make them a stronger focal point. So I cheat the lighting a bit, making a faux spotlight from the front to help them stand out.
Still, something to keep in mind on the next piece.
