Description
The London that I have arrived in is very similar to every other London I have ever visited. The historic city center, Big Ben, and skyscrapers dot the land, but something is off and I am quick to notice. The Red, white, and blue Union jack is nowhere to be seen, instead there is flag flying with the colors of gold, purple, and red, where a red crown sits at the center of a purple gear. And in the sky, advanced airships fly through the sky quickly, and I even pass a police car that is testing out an advanced robotic police dog.
Before I meet my first interviewee, I talk with a young couple on the street, two men who have recently left a meeting of the London chapter of the Monarcho-Socialist Party.
“So how do you feel about living in London?”
“Great, plenty of nice people, the sights are beautiful, and I feel incredibly safe wherever I go. Something we might have never had if the revolution failed.”
I leave the two to walk, and enter a large, cosmopolitan park area, where large banners depicting the beautiful People’s Queen Julia are on every wall and streetlamp. Each poster is filled with positive messaging. My personal favorite is “Work not for King and country, but for community and progress!”
The People’s Princess Isabella is a stunning portrait of her mother, brown hair, yellow eyes, and muscular arms. She doesn’t wear a dress like a normal princess, instead preferring a suit and tie. I sit down next to her and shake her hand, my hand slightly aching after she squeezes it.
“I’m sorry, my health is an important thing to me, and I’ve always liked being the People’s Warrior as the citizens call me. Back before the revolution, someone like me wouldn’t be allowed in a “respectable” society. Now, anyone can be who they are, all under the protection of my family.”
The People’s Kingdom of Britain has its history in the Great Depression before WW2, a massive economic downturn that caused many nations to turn to radical new ideas. In Europe, the Accelerationist movement under Adolf Hitler transformed Germany into a warmachine dedicated to the art of violence, while Russia managed to successfully join the United States as a global democratic superpower. And in Southern North America, the Free Republics turned on each other after some became Distributionist and united under the Distributionist Confederacy. However, in Japan and Britain, a unique movement began to gain popularity.
“The people of Japan and Britain had, for such a long time, been under the control of monarchs who simply did not care for the people. There were no laws to keep them in place, and the economies for both nations were treated as a personal bank account. Socialist and Marxist groups began to work alongside pro-monarchist reform organizations, culminating in the creation of the Monarcho Socialist Movement.”
In both Britain and Japan, revolutionaries led by influential figures joined together to overthrow and banish their monarchies and replace them with a new system of government. In Britain, the Lamsworth family became the new royal family, while the Ozaki family took control in Japan. The People’s Kingdom of Britain and the People’s Empire of Japan entered the world stage as comrades, and the world would never be the same.
“Britain and Japan still held onto some colonies, while Canada and Indonesia were lost to the old monarchies; several colonies actually joined in the revolution. India, Korea, South Africa, and Vietnam became hotspots for the revolution. I myself have visited South Africa, which went from a racist hellhole to a prosperous region home to our technology industry.”
After the second world war, in which the forces of Acceleration Germany and Futurist Italy attempted to take over Europe, Britain and Japan became a third bloc in the cold war between the United States of America and Russia and the Holy Coalition led by Brazil. While Brazil and Amerarussia spent their money on weapons of mass destruction, Britain and Japan focused on industry, and Japan became the first country to create a nuclear bomb.
“My home nation, alongside Japan, spread the revolution all the way to Canada and Persia, now they have Monarcho Socialist governments as well. The Indonesians are the only ones who escaped our grapes, but one day we will take them back. I am sure of it.”
I changed the topic of the conversation to the government of the People's Kingdom.
“In order to both keep a monarchy and power while also benefiting the people, my grandparents alongside the Revolutionary Parliament did something that the old monarch would find nightmarish; they created a massive set of rules for the monarch.”
“How could these rules make it fair for a monarchy to exist?”
“Very simply, they designed the Monarchist Rules based on the American presidency. Any monarch can be deposed and replaced by a relative if they try to abuse their power, and even if they don’t abuse it, they have a set of rules. For example, a monarch’s wealth is not infinite, they get paid every year, but must pay for everything they desire, making sure they don’t steal from the working people. So that means that all those elaborate dresses and suits and crowns? Gone, thrown into the museum, hence why I enjoy the comforts of a modern suit, much better than anything my family’s predecessor would wear.”
“How does parliament work?”
“Much like the original design, although with a few changes. There is no one party system, the madness currently happening in Mexico shows the dangers of that, rather, there are multiple parties, each a supporter of the monarchy, while also being leftist. I’ve meant quite a few of them, the Communists, Nationalist Socialists, Vanguardists, we even have quite a few Techno Liberals coming from the Nordic Technate.”
“Do any of the powers manage to get a Prime Minister? Or do the Democratic Monarch Socialists always win?”
“Oh the other parties win sometimes, we don’t push down any other groups like in the Distributionist Confederacy. Just last year the Monarcho-Communists managed to get their Prime Minister, and they were a pretty good leader, with lots of agreeable policies surprisingly.”
I then get to the biggest question I have for the People’s Princess, and that is why socialists would allow monarchists to remain after the revolution.
“Well that is a complicated question, which is theorized and explained in several award winning documentaries. However, if I had to explain my opinion on it, it would go like this.”
The Princess adjusts her suit and looks at a poster of her mother.
“A monarchy is a symbol of the people, they are a dynasty that has lasted generations and spread across history. Some Marxists think that this is a bad thing, that monarchy will always put people down and keep them in the past, but I don’t believe that. To me, a monarchy can evolve, change alongside the people like a person growing up. My family is still quite young, alongside the Ozaki family in Japan, but we will endure and continue to watch over our citizens and see where the future will lead us.”
We say goodbye after chatting a little bit more, and the Princess buys me a cupcake as well for the next trip I have to make. I hitch a ride on a hypersonic train that goes across the Atlantic Ocean all the way to North America. I arrive at the Greater Metropolitan Corridor, a massive independent city state that stretches from Boston all the way to the Free City of Washington. After resting at the Liberty Hotel, I make my way via train down the coast all the way to D.C, where I meet my next interview in front of the Lincoln memorial.
Professor James T. Luther of the Metropolitan History Council is a short, but luxuriously bearded black man with a missing eye. He is retired due to some of his more eccentric views on history, and he is happy to talk with me about the future and present of the Monarcho-Socialist nations. He shakes my hand and we get right down to business with a serious tone.
“I’ve been to both of those countries and their colonies, and they do care for their people, but don’t allow propaganda and first impressions to deceive you, the nations of the Monarchist Internationale are still countries. Crime in the wilderness is immense as most of the funding goes towards city planning and development, I was even fortunate enough to witness a small town get its bank robbed in plain daylight.”
“So crime is the biggest problem?”
“No no, that would be the government itself. You see, the governments are required by the constitutions to spread the wealth equally, but under certain loopholes, the Parliament can get twice as much wealth for themselves and spend it on the tech industry. While Amerarussia and Brazil may have immense militaries and space stations, and Mexico controls a damned clone army, Britain and Japan are just a few years away from having a A.I dominated workforce!”
“How is that bad?”
“Well there are a variety of reasons, and history does have certain parallels. Influxes of immigrants are what caused the United States to collapse in 1861 as the North didn’t have enough jobs and the southern population fought back against what they saw as impure hordes. And look what has happened to this country! New England is run by cultists, the south is run by Christian bureaucrats, and the West Coast has been united with Russia!”
James leans forward.
“When A.I begins to take over the smaller tasks, such as car building, or construction work, then the true intentions of the government will be seen. You’ve heard about the speeches right? Japan and Britain are ready for conquest, first it will be Indonesia, then North America, then Brazil and Mexico and space!”
“That sounds like mad ramblings.”
“But it is true! Look, I was forced to retire from my position for some controversial reasons, but I was still right about my theories on how New England was going to become a greater global power. So believe me when I say this, Britain and Japan are evolving, using technology as a way to further their goals and forge a new type of imperialism.”
Overhead, a drone swarm quickly flies overhead, causing James to shield his face by looking at the ground. When they pass, he looks up again.
“Sorry, force of habit, I always worry that the Metropolitan government is watching me. Listen here, I have a doctor's appointment soon so I shall make this quick. Japan and Britain do have some perks, yes,but at their core they are nations that are planning for something big. They already have allies in Canada and Persia, and their technology industry is incredible, so make sure that you understand, the revolution hasn’t stopped, it's only begun.”
. . .
Edit- I finished the text. This is just one of multiple countries that exist in a small world filled to the brim with unique governments, stay tuned!
