Description

An Apollo-era spacecraft for the Ares I Mars landing mission. Propelled by three Planetary Propulsion Modules each powered by a nuclear thermal rocket descended from NERVA, Ares I would land the first astronauts on Mars in March of 1982 after a nine-month journey. While technically beaten in the same month by the Soviet Venus flyby as the first manned interplanetary mission, the sight of American astronauts stepping foot on another world would be considered among the greatest achievements in human history.

Somewhat based on Von Braun's Mars Mission proposals

I've never heard of this book before but a lot of this sounds surprisingly close to the backstory I have for my Ares mission. I found some good concepts for what his mission would look like so I could attempt it at some point.
