So sorry for the very low quality it's hard to make a good and representative photograph with an old camera, especially when there's no sun and any decent natural light outside -_-
I'll keep trying to get something better, but for now this'll have to do I'm afraid.

It's made with this brooch [link] , venetian lace, a wannabe venetian lace ornament and a creme/golden coloured veil I had ^^

Any thoughts or remarks ?

Woops I'm so sorry for my extremely late reply *shame shame*Β xD I don't really do any commissions because I'm not professional at ALL
I just try stuff with the limited knowledge and sewing capacities that I haveΒ and strangely enough it works out, somehow
So I'm afraid I can't really help you =/ But I always think 'hey, if I can do it anyone can do it' So I'd like to help you if you should ever be brave enough to try & make a hat yourself and have any questions, but as I said, I don't know a lot about the stuff myself either Really, just do a lot of trial& error and you might even get a big surprise of your own sewing& decorating capabilities

Thanks a lot I will be posting some decent pictures soon, I hope, if I can figure out how the 'edit deviation' function works

How long did you work on this? It looks really professional ( I did some crafts in the past too, like some scarfs and so on but this one must have been hard to make).

Oh really, did you make scarfs? How? knitting or something like that ?
I'd like to give crocheting a go, you can make pretty lace things with that once you're experienced But it seems so hard

But no I actually didn't work that long on it, maybe around 5hours.. I don't think it will differ much It's not that hard actually, I used the filling of shoulderfillings (I don't know how it's called in English, like the stereotype fillings they used in the 80s and such, to get that ugly square shoulder silhouette they wanted xD) and after fiddling around with it I ended up flattening it. Wasn't my intention but I just went along with it And then I sewed some brown taffeta on by hand; searched something lace-like to go on top of it xD After which I found this scarf and just puffed it up, held it in place with needles untill it looked quite Victorian and then sewed it on, VERY amateuristic

If you turn the hat around you see like 20-50 stitched running along the surface, no logic whatsoever xD So I guess you simply have to line it to hide your amateuristic approach lol

So I'd reaaaallly want to know how actual hatmakers make their frame Because I have NO idea how they get that firm, sturdy basic shape =/ And how you get the fabric to fit without wrinkling (I think with steam) =/

Yes, I started knitting when I was 8 - a friend of my mother taught me how to do it. Over the years, I've learned about 4-5 patterns and made about 7 scarfs, every two years a new one. Knitting isn't very hard, you just have to keep up the patience for some weeks until your hands get used to the patterns which repeat themselves until one is finished. (Believe me, I'm not practically gifted at all, at an IQ-test I took as I child I was given an under-average practical intelligence level and saved by other stuff like languages and math, where I was better)

Sewing is actually something I gave up on, as I constantly got hurt by the needle

Indeed, it has a Victorian touch to it

Actual hatmakers will probably never reveal their secrets to the curious public ^^ As I do like documentations, I've seen how pencils, food and technical things are produced, but never how hats are made. It means that it has to be kept hidden

Oh how nice! I love it when people already know something from when they were little xD like 'I started when I was only that young and now I can still do it', maybe even improved the skill dramaticaly that's cool

Lol, being hurt by the needle, ahh that's familiar indeed xD But the funny part is that you often don't even feel you've hurt yourself. Like, in my school we once had to make something and a classmate of mine all of a sudden noticed the crazy mount of red smudges she had, apparantly her finger was bleeding it was hard to believe she hadn't noticed hurting herself, with all that blood (in comparison with the average little red smudge you have after pricking yourself)

Lol yeah, stupid secretive hatmakers! But I've found this book that apparantly is the Hatmaker's Bible, according to professional hatmakers But it's completely sold out, only available as a secondhand sell on amazon.com so that's a bit of a dilemma xD It feels like a very unreliable thing to do, order it like that, but I soooo want that book

Thanks a lot that's actually a brooch I made for the hat [link] (way better picture), that way it's still removable and I could even wear it if I'd want to
