Description An unusual dark colored, almost spotless leopard photographed at the Iziko South African museum. The spots on the body seem to have blended together and merged - this is called abundism or pseudo-melanism.

Messybeast has another photo of it.

It's possible it could be a hybrid of some sort too? Β encrypted-tbn3.gstatic.com/ima…

I don't think it's a hybrid, although it's hard to tell from a taxidermy mount. It looks pretty basically leopard with no lion traits. It's also pretty rare for hybridization in the wild, that seems to mostly happen in captivity. It would be neat if the museum could somehow do a DNA test!

It happens between deer in the wild here.. We have hybrid deer that are Mule deer crossed with white tail.Β
It also occures between fish and antelope species. We skinned and cleaned the skull of an Oryx that was a cross between a regular Gemsbok and a scimitar. It DOES happen.... but it's like ... one in a million. - shrug- I've seen various pelt patterns in bobcats, but really it's gonna be hard to tell without being able to get a dna sample as you said. Still a fascinating feline.Β

Definitely. I've never seen a live leopard with that sort of pattern, it's kind of a shame it was shot but the mount is clearly pretty old.

Beautiful whatever the case. tho it does look very old but maybe just an adaptation if its not just because of old age? really cool cat tho.Β

I wonder if the specimen has already faded and if it was darker when alive. Fascinating either way.

Possibly, I think black breaks down to a reddish color, and it looked pretty old.

Oh wow... That is some beautiful coloration though. The "king leopard" on that link as well just looks plain gorgeous. I bet it'd be a treat to actually see these types roaming in the wild.
