Preemptive question answering!
They are supported with magic sculpt - air drying epoxy clay that is very strong and 14 gauge (i think) steel wire. They are very sturdy!
Please read this before commenting :3 thx!

Wow! Given that they are supported entirely by the very tip of Twilight's tail, that really is amazing.

This is seriously amazing. I've been wanting to try making ponies out of sculpey clay, but I never dreamed of anything this amazing. Using wire to support them like that so it appears they might as well be ACTUALLY FLYING is ingenious. And having the wire in the tail! Amazing.

Oooh, awesome! I have a zillion things I want to say and ask but I need to read your journal first to find out what you have covered already xD I love sculpey clay and I'm good with it. I'm also pretty good with wire--I've made some sculptures of animals entirely out of wire. I use copper, though, and gauges ranging from 18 to 24, depending on what I'm doing, so it's very different and not as sturdy. Then again, I'm twisting them into a lot of shapes, some fairly intricate, so I need a different level of flexibility... I miss the 22 and 24 gauge wire, though; the 18 is starting to annoy me because it can't do nearly as much detail in something small...and I miss the plastic coated wire, too, that didn't get the colors scratched off by my pliers... It was actually when I was trying to make a wire outline of a pony that one of my friends suggested I check out your work. Sadly, the outline didn't turn out--I was doing Twilight with dark purple wire and got the body and tail made but the wire snapped at the tip of the horn. I overbent it in my attempt to get it to a nice point. The wire was stiff and it was only an inch and a half long or so total so it was hard to manipulate it... I should probably try again, but losing an hour worth of work is depressing and I'm not eager to have my wire snap again.

I love your stuff so much.
Every time I see something make it to the front page I want to commission you. I even have money set aside just for you. But I can never think of what I'd want.
Forever in limbo.

I keep staying amazed by how awesome your sculptures look. Your ponies are incredibly adorable.
But I have to say that I really love this one. I always loved the Twilight and Rainbow Dash duo (two fav ponies with Luna) and with this pose? Simply precious.
Awesome work dear artist.

so is it the steel wire that keeps this from breaking or what? I'm always curious about these things, because from what I know, all the weight should have caused Twilight and Dash to snap off the stand by now

yep :3 the steel isn't something you can snap with your hands. I overbuild for sturdiness.
