Technical pens, concentrated watercolor, watercolor, inkwash, and gouache on Arches hotpress block. I'm not completely happy with the skin tones, but it was a fun experiment and all in all I'm pretty happy with it

Concentrated watercolor?  What is that?  Do you mean dye?  (i.e. Doc P.H. Martin's "colored inks" - which are not inks, but dyes)
The rocks are nicely rendered, but the sand looks like you dicked with it too much.  With water color, as you know, one can't make many passes. If you don't get what you want with the first and second, it's a bust.

Yeah I think they're also called dyes, you can do a lot more passes with them. It was my first time messing with them and I've got more to learn. The sand came out a little off, and there were some other things that bugged me but all in all I like them. Always good to try new tools. Here's the actual product www.dickblick.com/products/dr-…

. . . and as far as passes, you have to be very particular about how you lay in dyes.  they build in layers, so one pass.  Like anything else, you can keep a stroke alive if you keep a wet edge.  But once you wipe it flat and dry, once the bead is gone, a noticeable layering effect will result.  So, I guess the tip would be to keep a wet edge.  Which sounds like a dirty double entendre that might come from the mouth of one of these guys.  XD

yeah I've done quite a bit of inkwash which is very similar as far as technique goes, the only difference i've noticed is the colors can start to separate if you over work them

Yeah.  Dyes.  I have no idea why they call them watercolors.  Water color is a suspension of pigment in water.  A dye is a solution; there are no particles in it.
You can cut these with water up to 50 percent, which is better than using them concentrated from the bottle.  Gray Morrow did some beautiful work with them - Orion, for one.  I have a set from when his wife and I went to Kubert's back in 2002, or thereabouts.  I have yet to use them for anything since it was at that time that I set my sights on mastering ink (the black kind - which like water color is a suspension, but of carbon, instead of pigment - lol).

All the illustrators from the Silver age and back colored with dyes when they colored for comics.  You're following the right footsteps.  Good luck with them.  Wish I could give you some better pointers.

Me too, they're Gravity Boots that he jacked from his old job at Earth Watch. He was supposed to turn them in at the end of his shift but there was quite a bit of confusion going on and no one asked, so he decided to keep them. Not really a spoiler cuz he never gets a chance to use them in the comic, but yeah I over think stuff.

Ah. You never know if they can come in handy one moment or another. Not being able to use them could actually become a running gag ...
