Description
Sadness filled my mind as the rest of the day flew by. I woke up in the nurse's office in a cold sweat, sitting in a puddle on the small, plastic bed. My breathing was heavy and I looked around the room frantically. I heard my mother's voice coming from the other side of the ajar door and slowly stood up.It was just a dream, Melanie.
"Mellie!" I turned to see my little sister waddling over to me, arms open wide. "Mellie wake!" A small smile grew over my lips as I picked her up and cuddled her. And to think that you'll go through what I'm going through… I thought, crying.
"Melanie," I heard my mother whisper. I glanced up at her to see that she was, for the first time, actually worried about me. "Darling, what happened?" She moved quickly and smoothed down my hair, watching me rock back and forth, cradling Tanya.
"I went…" I started, trying to hold myself together. "I can't say it here…" My mother nodded and kissed my forehead; it was such a shock to see her so understanding, so caring. She helped me stand on my feet and took Tanya away from my arms.
"Let's go home, sweetie." she mumbled, nodding to the nurse. The nurse filled out a form that would go to my teachers telling them that I would not be coming back for the rest of the day. We walked to the car, driving home in silence. That's what we monsters do; we do not talk about our identities in public, even if we are in a car. Arriving at our house on the outskirts of the city, I saw my aunt and cousin standing on our front porch, patiently waiting. My mother swore under her breath and climbed out of the car. "Now's not the time for you to be showing up on my door step, Monica." She hissed, walking up the steps.
"That's not the proper greeting to give your sister and niece." Aunt Monica said, crossing her arms. She glanced over at me and smiled. "I see your infection has cleared up nicely." she added.
"Not like you helped." My mother snapped, unlocking the door, balancing Tanya on her hip. "What is it that you want, anyway?"
"My test samples came back positive that it was vampire venom." she replied, following my mother into the house.
"Well, that information is useless now, isn't it? I already knew that it was vampire venom without your damn smartsy-fartsy sciencey stuff." My mother said, sarcastically. "Can't you see that there's something more important going on right now? My daughter just had a traumatic nightmare here, and you're sitting here talking about vampire venom. That's the least of my worries here." My aunt looked at me, eyebrows raised, and gasped.
"Melanie? What happened?" she asked. Violet walked over and tapped me on the shoulder.
"Did you have a fight with your true self?" Violet asked, rubbing my back. I nodded slowly, shuddering. "May I ask what happened?" I sighed. I didn't want to talk about it, because honestly, I felt as if something in me died and was gone. But, they would continue to interrogate me; might as well as get it over with.
"I…I locked my true form in my unconscious." I muttered. "She was causing too much trouble, too much chaos. It's better that she stays there and leaves me alone." My mother scowled at me, shaking her head. I knew I had disappointed her, I knew she wanted me to be the one to make her feel like she was important again, someone to be remembered in the family line.
But I had failed her.
"I see." Violet said, pulling away. "My true self is in the unconscious as well; I think you made an excellent choice, Melanie." I heard my mom slamming pots and pans everywhere, telling me she was upset with my decision.
"Thank you…but it was so…terrifying." I whispered. "It was so scary. I feel…I feel like I should take her out." Violet shook her head.
"You can't. The only way she can get out now is if you're in absolute and complete danger, and even then, it's almost impossible." Violet said. "And it's dangerous; it could potentially severely injure you, maybe even kill you. As long as you stay out of trouble, you're fine. You're as close as being human as you can get, Melanie! Congrats!" She pulled me in for a hug and laughed. I sighed.
"I feel awful, Violet, like I've made a huge mistake." I mumbled. Violet pulled away and smiled.
"No, you haven't. Being a succubus isn't for everyone." she added. My mother stomped out of the kitchen and crossed her arms. "Aunt Ariel, is something…"
"Monica, you and your daughter," my mother hissed, her eyes glowing red. "Out. Now. "
"Ariel, what's the problem?" Monica asked, worried.
"GET OUT OF MY HOUSE!!" my mom screeched, the house shaking and rumbling as Monica and Violet scurried out of the door. She glared at me, her nostrils flaring. "Melanie, we need to have a talk. Why on earth would you do that to your true self? What about Samantha? Huh? How are you going to get rid of her?" I shook my head, standing up and walking to my room. "Don't walk away from me when I'm talking to you!" she snarled, wagging her finger at me. "We're having this discussion now and you're going to listen to what I have to say! Do you understand?"
"Mom, I'm not in the mood." I said, frowning.
"I'm not in the mood either, but it's apparent that we need to have this discussion!" she snapped. "Do you realize what you've done?" I rolled my eyes at her and began walking away, moving over to the stairs. "If you're ever in danger, she won't be able to save you! Don't you understand how your true self works?" I paused, teetering over two stairs, glaring at her. "Your true self, if it is locked up in the subconscious, can work like a defense mechanism. When you're in danger or if you have fatal injuries, your true self takes over and will fight to try to save your life."
"Yes, mom, I know." I mumbled. "It's kind of obvious." She shook her head.
"I'm not finished yet!" she hissed, chasing after me. I heard Tanya whining, her small feet thumping across the floor, demanding attention. "With your true self now in the unconscious, she'll never come out..."
"Yes, I got that impression from Violet." I said, throwing my hands up in the air. "I know I've made a mistake, mom! There's no point in yelling at me for it!" My mom grabbed my wrist, pulled me down and dragged me down the stairs with her. She pulled me over to the dining room table and shoved me in the chair. She sat across from me, smoothing her hair down and sighing.
"You have to go back there and get her out." she said, staring at me in the eye. "There's no other way to save her; you have to go back there, break the chains and let her stay in the subconscious until it's too late." My mouth dropped; the unconscious was scary enough when I went there by accident. If I went back there on purpose, I'd be terrified; and who knew what the true Melanie would do to me when I freed her.
"I'm not going back there!" I cried, standing up. My mother shook her head.
"You have to; it's the only way to save yourself." she sighed, standing up as well. "When a soul is in the unconscious for too long, it will slowly wither away and die. It will cease to exist." Tanya waddled over and my mother bent over to pick her up. "You have a few days to think about it, Melanie, but not long before she begins to be drained of her power. Don't push it away Melanie, or you will be done for when it comes to fighting over prey."
