The first thing I thought of when I saw this was Hachi, the dog who waited everyday for his dead owner to return.

my interpretation:
the human that was holding the leash is gone and left him alone, now he's lonely.
think about it before you decide to get yourself a pet.

or he's alone because he's in love and thinking about it

It's weird...looking to the left side of the picture makes me feel a sense of sorrow. But when I look up to the right and see that heart, I feel hope. This drawing has very little but so much more at the same time. It speaks volumes without saying anything at all. It isn't packed full of details, no background, lots of negative space, and yet it doesn't need to be filled in. It is perfect the way it is. This truly is art, it provokes emotion and thought. It makes me think of the dog who would wait on the corner for it's owner everyday and meet him after work. Then the man died in an accident (I believe) But the dog still waited for him every day...

Ohhhhh! I'm thinking about of the movie Hachiko: A Dog's Story. I cried.

This is from someones point of view. They're walking along, and they see a dog that's just standing in the middle of the sidewalk, and it's leash is flipped towards them, as though it was just dropped there and hoping someone would walk along and pick it up. The dog gives the person a sidelong glance, which says "Please take me."
All of this being a large analogy for abandonment and adoption, either of actual dogs or children.
This what comes to mind seeing this picture, but only when I'm told to "think about this", otherwise I'd just say "AWWWWWWW IT'S SO CUTE I WANNA HAVE A DOG JUST LIKE THAAAAT"
