Don't touch the hardness.

Hardness deals with the geometry of the brush, it has nothing to do with soft edges where the background eraser is concerned. Use Sharpness to determine how sharp or blurry the edges are by determining how much unmixing of colors you need. Higher values for sharper edges, lower values for softer edges.

Otherwise, nice tutorial.
