Description
My largest LEGO creation to date: a 5-foot replica of an original Nintendo controller - that's actually wired to play as a real controller with my NES emulator! To see the whole photo shoot with details on the construction, check out my Tumblr blog entry:[link] (photos by Gene Kennish, project and video by me)
This video consists of about 20 minutes of raw game footage, sped-up x2 into a quick 3 minute montage with the orchestrated Super Mario Bros. theme song (by the Boston Pops Orchestra)!

Built entirely from LEGO bricks, plates and tiles, and using the magic of Technic shock absorbers, I managed to create functional buttons which reciprocate when pressed. The large buttons make contact with momentary pushbuttons from Radio Shack, which are then wired and soldered to the circuitry of an actual NES controller taken apart. The controller uses a USB converter and ultimately plugs into my computer to play ROMs! Playing games is on this thing is rather difficult, as it's like a giant arcade pad. Some games in particular that required dual usage of the A & B buttons (notably Super Mario 3 and R.C. Pro-Am); in some instances of the video, you'll see me accidentally throw Mario off a cliff, as it's difficult to jump and hold on to the run [B] button simultaneously! Playing Dr. Mario and Tetris, on the other hand were rather simple. Merely coordinating the D-pad with a few pushes of the A button were all it took. -Baron von Brunk
Featured games: Super Mario Bros. 3 R.C. Pro-Am Tetris Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Arcade Game Chip & Dale's Rescue Rangers Dr. Mario Contra

The cord is formatted to function with original Nintendo Entertainment Systems, but because I do not own a TV, I used a USB adapter and an emulator in my computer for the demonstration. Furthermore, each game played in the demo video was in fact a real title that I own at least one copy of, hence from a legal standpoint, I was not pirating games. And just to lower your self-esteem even more, after this controller was completed and published, Nintendo of America personally contacted me and commissioned me to build a LEGO display at their flagship store in Manhattan, and thus their licensing department was amazed by my work -- with no angry complaints nor cease-and-desist demands whatsoever. Even with using their name and intellectual property in this giant controller, they gave me the green light and ultimately paid me money for me work.
Fail.

My brain is unable to comprehend the sheer epicness of this lego model...
Now if you'll excuse me, I need to get a lobotomy so I can repair my brain from the epicness.......

That looks incredibly nice for a giant NES controller that you constructed out of Legos, and I should check out the video of it in action as well!

The large buttons are suspended with LEGO Technic springs, and underneath the large buttons are momentary pushbuttons from Radio Shack. The pushbuttons are soldered and wired to the circuit board from an actual NES controller, which is then plugged into my computer via a USB converter.

I actually didn't count the amount; as this project was more "organic", and had multiple incarnations and versions - such as being built halfway, getting torn down due to ascetic issues, and rebuilt to be more accurate. The Fireflower Airship, however was built with lots of planning and engineering, and I even maintained a log to keep track of all of the parts used.
