Description So, one of the species that we've been working on re-designing, was the electric-type dragon - also named the Storm Dragon.

I finished touching up the far left image of the male (they are slightly sexually dimorphic), and thought I'd show some of the design progress I drew, that lays behind the current iteration (they may not be done yet)

I am absolutlety in love with this character design. I've been trying to balance my dragon with that cartoonish character design, with that animalistic touch which you are Spartan have mastered. Teach me your ways.

Thank you! I'm glad you like it. I've been wondering if I was the only one digging this weird mix of features, but thankfully not.
I already got this question and answered it in the comments below, but basically it has to do with psychology and knowing which features people find to be recognizable as humanoid, and which ones they don't, and then finding a balance between those.

they remind me of some form of kites that you see on the beach when they fly. They look fantastic

Eeeey awesome! They actually do live in coastal regions and I really did want them to resemble kites in a way XD

If you don't mind my asking, are there any general guidelines you use in these designs to help create something which looks civilised whilst still being naturall and animalistic in design?

I don't mind at all - that's actually a really good question.
I suppose it can be difficult to pin, but I do use a few psycological shorthands for providing the character with some semblance of 'civility' you could say, while balancing their more animalistic aesthetics. Mainly, I focus on the eyes and face in general by giving it room for expression.
In the case of these particular characters (for Age of Heroes), most of them do actually live in their own civilized societies, so I try to give many of them as much possibility for manipulating objects as possible.
Mostly though, the design process begins with thinking on their past and current environments and how they used to/currently navigate those spaces.
