Description
YAY!!! MY FIRST PRISMACOLOR PICTURE!!! *victory pose!*not too bad for my first pic colored traditionally.... though, i know there are TONS of mistakes... like... MILLIONS of them...
I definitively have a new respect for ppl who color traditionally... this was INSANELY hard.. and it's barely even shaded....
ok, now here's what i really, REALLY need... please, please, PLEASE point out my mistakes, and how i can improve my coloring traditionally... i could really use it...
I had an REALLY hard time with keeping the ink within the lines... i still have no clue how to do it efficiently... every time i color a portion of it, it bleeds like crazy then spreads out across the page, going into place i don't want it to go...
oh and btw, I've been wondering this... should I have colored the face? i mean, i don't have any like really light grey colors so i wasn't sure what to do....
I really like how the color of the robe turned out... it's a hard mix of like 3 different shades of blue lol xD
I had originally forgotten the wings in the line art, added those in at the last minute...
and he's not really a mage... he's got a few pieces from the thief's outfit lol xD
Time: omgsh, like 5 hours... or more, idk... but it was 90 minutes for the coloring...
Inspiration: PRISMACOLOR MARKERS!!!
done in March of 2009 with prismacolor markers, a tablet, paint tool SAI, a mechanical pencil, a sharpie, and photoshop....
basically the way i did this was that i sketched it out on paper, scanned it and did the line art digitally, then printed it out and did the colors by hand... i really like how the line art still shows through the picture really well...
and now i get to join all of those ppl who say "My scanner killed this pic, it looks so much better in person" HAHAH lol... well not really, i like how my scanner did on this one... but I'm sure that is to come...
btw, does anyone know how to make colors look lighter? cause i was really desperate for a lighter brown, but all i have is dark brown...

hi ^^ i'll do my best to help as asked by your friend.
to be honest I also have a very big problem with staying in the lines. I think there are two ways to fix this.
Firstly you try to be as careful as you can, but if all else fails, get a white gel pen and basically white out the mistakes. These are mainly for parts that bleed outside of the lineart, rather than inside of it. Inside you need to be extra careful to not get it where other colours are going to go; unless somehow you can blend them to make it less noticeable.
the second way is to get special masking tape. I hear frisket masking tape works wonders and that's what uses. I haven't had the chance to try masking myself however.
As for critiquing your application...umm I'm not sure what to say because there does seem to be lack of shading as you've already said. But where i can see shading - perhaps you can be a little more adventurous with it. I realise that this is your first piece, but it would be good to add alot more shading and to more areas. (a common thing that I see with peoples work who are just starting out [both cg and traditional] is ...they like to really cling to the edges with their shading. Almost like they are afraid to go towards the middle and shading things in fear of screwing it up. But it's best to break that habbit earlier on.
as for shading white, you can use blue, purples, greys so long as they are reasonable enough in shade I think....it could vary from person to peson but you don't necessairily need to stick to grey with that. I'm not sure if you can make colours lighter...with markers at least...with copics its easier and I can actually control different shades...to an extent but how much ink is soaked into the paper. It's also easier with the brush nibs have (im not sure about prismas sorry) Maybe for shading you can even try that, going over certain areas multiply times to darken the colour.
I hope that helps ^^ If you have any specific questions please feel free to ask me ~

omgsh, thank you! i was a bit too nervous to ask you...
grrr... but she told you the wrong pic to talk about... this is after I've experimented for a bit... please look at this one first: [link]
omgsh, ya i hate staying in the lines.. it's really frustrating....
white gel pen... *writing that down* I'll have to get one of those...
meh, i think I'll stay away from the masking tape.. sounds annoying to do... and i think i can stay in the lines now... I've slowly gotten a steadier hand...
ya you depicted it perfectly... i was way nervous to try doing anywhere near the center with the shading.. I'll try to be more adventurous with the shading... but honestly, i don't really know how lighting effects work all that well..
ya, prismacolor markers don't have brush nibs... (btw, what do those do?)
I've actually tried that recently... just adding another layer after it dries tends to make good shadows...
mhh, not really any specific questions... i just wish i could do as much shading as you... you're art looks amazing! and i really, REALLY wish i could draw that well...
oh wait, i do have one question.. what do you think of the line art? am i adding enough details in and such? (note: please respond to this based on that other pic i mentioned)

Kururu-Pon In reply to Voxian [2009-03-20 10:20:16 +0000 UTC]
brush nibs are just....easier to colour with. it's kinda just like...a pain brush but easier to apply the colours than a normal nib. these are copic sketch markers with the brush nibs
thankyou very much ^^ just keep practising~~
your lineart is nice and clean i think~ as for details that's entirely up to you? people would argue more details is better while some just like simple? so ^^

man, i wish i had some of those... they sound REALLY helpfull...
but i don't have the money to invest in stuff like that... *sniffle* (goes off with lame-o markers crying)
hmm k, i guess there seems to be many different ways it can go... I've noticed that most of the details come in to play when you actually color it... which is what I'm not very good at..... so ya, idk, I'll just have to keep working at it..
anywho, thanks for the help!

Hmm...I do think the way that you did the lines gives it a coloring book feel...you're welcome to use my lightbox, if you want. That way, you won't have to draw the lines at all in order to color in the picture.

*growls* I wasn't done with my comment yet ... >.> Let's see ... well, I'm certainly impressed with how little the markers bled on you with those tiny lines of yours. I can color with lines that small, and it'll look like the markers didn't bleed at all, but then I'll look back a minute later and realize it did... >.< And trust me, this is great, and I never would've suspected this was your first try with them.
As for coloring the face, it does look good when you add just a small amount of shadow to one side (not the whole face or anything), but since you don't have a light gray ... do you have a peach? Even a very light yellow would do. ^^
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
Voxian In reply to TsukiTsu [2009-03-13 01:54:48 +0000 UTC]
haha lol, i know how that is... and i already sent the other one back xD haha, whatever...
you think the markers didn't bleed that much? lol, i hate to say this... but they bled outside the lines like CRAZY, but i was too embarrased to upload it with all the bleed marks, so i used photoshop to delete some of the bleed/mistakes.... though, that only worked for the ones where the color was bordered by white... all the inside bleed marks are still there....
but ya, I already learned one thing... from now on I'll use much thicker lines...
thanks! i thought it was pretty bad for my first try... but idk, I've never really messed with these before... or even just coloring at all without the computer...
uhm, well i have a light grey marker from a different set... will that work? but otherwise, i do have a light yellow, but i experimented with it, it looked way too dark to me.....
i really should just order a light grey color..
oh and btw, what are opacity markers? and blending pencils? I saw them online somewhere... and it looked like they were related to markers... are they something i need to buy?

TsukiTsu In reply to Voxian [2009-03-13 02:12:08 +0000 UTC]
Oh ... I was wondering why all your lines looked so perfect (and marker-blood-less) ... ah, they just take some getting used to ... and thick lines! XDDDD
Sometimes different brands of markers don't react well with each other ... test it out to see if that light gray you have works with the other Prismacolors. ^^
Mmmm ... I don't have any opacity markers. And the blending Prismacolor ... I don't have one, so I don't know if it's worth it or not.

ya lol xD I should have mentioned that earlier...
anywho, ya, I'll try some thicker lines for sure...
kk, I'll definitely experiment with it... i hope it works...
well if you don't use them, then i won't bother with buying them... no point in wasting money on something i have no clue how to use and don't really need...

TsukiTsu [2009-03-12 20:37:17 +0000 UTC]
YOU BARELY BLED THE MARKERS AT ALL!?!
And let's see ... try mixing the brown with orange. It might work ... otherwise, if you have light tan, that's a really great light brown ... which set did you get anyway?
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
Voxian In reply to TsukiTsu [2009-03-13 01:49:06 +0000 UTC]
uhm ya... that's cause i don't know how to do it lol xD
I told you, I'm a total noob when it come to coloring traditionally... that and I've never messed with shading different colors together...
ya, i pretty much suck....
anyways, I have the 24 piece set... there wasn't a light brown, so i wasn't sure what colors to use.. it was really frustrating...
so uhm... what all did i do wrong? and btw, how in the world do you shade with these things? all i could manage was to get the base colors...
oh and markers kept bleeding outside the lines... you know any way to fix that?
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
TsukiTsu In reply to Voxian [2009-03-13 02:09:46 +0000 UTC]
You pretty much ... don't suck!
Don't worry about the lines, mine only didn't bleed because I used thick lines the first time ... small lines like that ... color close to the line, but don't touch it. The bleeding should do the rest!
You didn't really do anything wrong ... other than the apparent bleeding that you photoshopped out, the blending looks pretty good. ^^
Oh, and by the way, you should have Goldenrod if you have the 24 set ... you can make a yellow-ish brown if you use that (and make it darker by coloring over it). I remembered you wanted brown. ^^

Voxian In reply to TsukiTsu [2009-03-13 02:46:33 +0000 UTC]
lol, thanks... but i know i still have a lot to learn...
hmm ya, good point there... I'll make sure to use thicker lines from now on... that alone should help a lot...
well it didn't really bleed all that much.. just a bit... and there was one huge splotch of color that went out of the lines xD
k, I'm glad to hear that! i wasn't sure how the blending was supposed to work...
Oohh so that's how you make yellowish brown.. i was wondering... i tried mixing goldrenrod with normal brown, needless to say, it didn't work out...

Okay my prismacolor tips, cause that's the type of markers I use..
I sketch the picture, very VERY lightly and then erase the sketch very lightly so I can still see the lines.
Then I color the picture normally, also shading the picture. Then I outline the picture after.
I don't have any grey markers so I use crayolas X3
