Description
A character model sheet for Theos Ke Polemos an animated TV series proposal. This "thing" is a bit of a mystery in the Theos project. As the title suggest it's a M.I.B. or Men in Black, at least in the future setting of this story. It's, like most of the machines in the project, a bio-organic organism... or is it? Silliness aside, lets just say it's of a far more mysterious origin than the other machine entities which are called Sendai (not after the city in Japan). As for the design here, this is also the early take on it. He has some tiny feets (a stylistic thing I had for narrowish mech feet, still dig the look on the right machine. The next incarnation will have more stable ones still with some stylistic flair). I like the idea of a well dressed, suited, mecha thing intimidating the future populace of speaking about paranormal happenings, indeedy some strange goings on will be going on, and such.

Just a hint. If you want the other Deviants to be notified that you have responded to them, you need to click on the 'reply' button on their post. I was not sure if you were aware of that.
Would this charachter be modeled, and then animated, or would it have been drawn then animated? Im still not sure how they treat your concepts.

Ahh, I see that now, thanks for the heads up. I believe I may have hit that reply button in a few of my posts but not al of them, didn't realize it worked that way.
As for the concepts, good question. Obviously there have been quite a lot of 2d/3d animation hybrids as animators continue to improve their execution of this evolving technique. This process of integrating the two has come a long way, I'm sure you've seen plenty of anime where you noted as much. What I had in mind was that mechanical characters and vehicles would get the 3d modeled treatment and animated. The second approach, having the character hand drawn with 3d elements, such as the head or some mechanical part would prob be too expensive for a TV show. It has been done though, Disney did it for the cyborg character in Treasure Planet, his arm was CG while the rest of him hand drawn. They did an amazing job merging the two overall.
The look I'm more leaning to at this point is a cell shaded approach, like the landmates in Appleseed (though I want dirt and weathering added and I know that can be applied to a cell shaded model) as opposed to a more realistic feel such as Macross Zero (though I do like how they pulled that off still. The walker tank and aircraft I posted are more this look). At the moment no animation studios or sponsors have been approached for this project it's being prepared for a future pitch. Currently the project I'm doing right now is an animated short, all hand drawn by me. Some info on that project can be found here [link]

Yeah, alot of newer members to DA find the post/respond system not all that intuative.
I was thinking that these concepts, as they are, could suit the style seen in the Ghost in the Shell movies (not Stand Alone Complex). You might have to add some more mechanical details to the robots in that case. More texture information, if you decide to do the 3d route.
The charachters themselves look better if, when compaired to the machines, have a different level of detail. Not neccesarly simplified...but different.
As you said concerning cell shading and wear textures, the combination of the two would be simple enough. Either through the use of a procedural texture, or a hand drawn one, all you need to do is to make sure it is seperate and not effected by the toon shader.

Yes I would have to agree and you raise a good point, once you go 3d with this type of stuff detail really is no longer a huge issue which is frankly the great draw to doing so. I am dying to get back to working on this project but it's on hold for the moment, once I do I was actually planning to do exactly as you recommend, amping up the detail on anything intended for 3d. And working on adding all the little details is more than half the fun, I'm sure you would agree

Thank you. Yeah that's what I was inferring to in more stable ones comment on the post. I'll prob do something more like normal feet so it can wear some kind of shoes

Wow, some quick responses there, I just posted him LOL
Thanks guys. Yeah I was experimenting with the idea of CG textures and cell shading mixed for the look of mechanical characters for this show. I'm leaning toward a more cell shaded look overall though as it still tends to blend best in animation as far as visual aesthetic.

I like the mix between cel-shaded and brushed textures

Nice! Thorough design with detail and solid coloring. And not sketchy X3 Really good job -- looks cool
