Description Finished version of Dashie on a cloud. Done with sharpie and colored pencil. Touched up slightly digitally. I really tried to expand on FoxInShadow's character design this time around. Let me know what you think below. ^^

I've been doing some colored pencil drawings recently (Using cheapo Crayola, gotta make due) and I was wondering what pencils and sharpies you use because your shading and coloring is exactly what I'd like to see myself work towards and if so could I find those pencils at say Micheal's for under 30 dollars?

Idk how the prices are at Michael's, but I use Prismacolor premier pencils and I got 24 of them at Hobby Lobby for around $50. I think they have gone down since I got them though. As far as sharpies go, I use ultra-fine. I will admit that sharpies are really difficult to work with however. The flip side is that they are much cheaper than many other art markers(copic for example). You can literally spend hundreds of dollars on high end markers. I also enhance my drawing slightly using digital means as well. Just mix and match different techniques with your tools and you should eventually be able to get the desired effect. I hope this helps.

Good news for me as I have a Hobby Lobby very close by. I checked out the pencils and they sell several sets, one are the soft and the others hard, as well as the blender pencil separably. Do you use just the hard or both?

I should also stop using copy paper or sketch paper to color. It tends to not go so well.

Hard pencils tend to be used more for detailing, whereas softer pencils are better for shading. Personally I would go with the softer pencils. I don't use a blending pencil or stick. Tissue works well enough.

Hmmm never tried tissues for blending.

Mmmmmehhhhhhh!
I wish I had a good set of colouring pencils, I used to be good with colouring a while back, but then all my pencils started to disappear into thin air.
Oh dont get me wrong, drawing with a... for want of a better term, handwriting pencil is very good, it helps with shading, and applying even pressure, or where ever pressure needs to be even that is.
I guess you could say colouring pencils are a step up from handwriting pencils anyway, which of course they are in a way. For one thing they need more thought when choosing colours to put together.

Basically what I'm trying to say is, this is brilliant, and I think this is on a par, if not slightly higher, with my drawing style.
I'm sure that if I tried, I could do something as good as this.
...Not that i'm good already. ^_^

It would be tough to achieve this with just colored pencil. I used sharpie for the mane and tail,.and some other parts. I am glad that you like it though. You are not bad with colored pencil yourself. Just keep at it and you will develop quickly I am sure. ^^

oh look Dash shaved her neck and grew out her main in only one spot.
ok ok I joke, really I like pony tale dashy but it always strikes me as odd how no one seems to notice how if she really had this mane style she would have to do just that; shave her neck from the head down and than grow out her mane from just her head to make it work.

Vulpessentia In reply to Jrakob [2013-01-15 05:12:16 +0000 UTC]

I know what you mean, but that is the wonderful thing about drawing ponies. They do not have to be anatomically correct by any means. No one is worried about something like that when drawing multicolored, cartoon ponies. But you are absolutely correct good sir. Her mane would continue down her neck as you described, but I enjoy the idea of this hairstyle on her, so I drew it.

Just so that you know, you did do a pretty good job emulateing Fox's style. When I saw the thumbnail for this, that's who I thought had drawn it. So yeah, you did a pretty spot on job!

All that aside, I gotta say, you did great work on this. I love it!

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Vulpessentia In reply to purityboys [2013-01-14 21:42:09 +0000 UTC]

In general, the color in the back of her mane, consists of just the cooler colors (ie blue green purple)
