You must have a lot of yarn when you want to make those characters.

It just takes about one skein of the main color(s) and ends and pieces of the trim colors. Since I crochet and knit everyday, I have a room full of yarns, and I still don't always have the color or type I really need at the moment- so sometimes I have to fudge a little on colors

Thank you! And you can google up hundreds of crochet tutorials on the net. There are many that are video tutorials, which are very easy to learn from .
A great place to begin learning is HERE They start from the very basics and work up.
If you have troubles learning any of the stitches, one of my favorite video tutorial teachers is HERE . She gives excellent video instruction of every stitch and technique I can think of, making them easy to learn.
Most places also have instruction on reading patterns and the abbreviations.

I probably wouldnt have so much time to work on these, if it werent for the fact it's nearly impossible to go outside and garden right now. I live on Lake LBJ in Burnet county, and the drought is murder. I can't handle the extreme heat so I stay inside with my a/c LOL... plenty of time to work on whatever I choose

Tell me about it! I hate going outside in this weather, though admittedly, we've had more rain than I expected. It's still between 95 and 102 everyday though and the humidity is horrible. I'm a big fan of a/c too!
