That is what is called a hammer grip, and the name is not only suggestive but instructional. This is how you hold a hammer. If you hold a sword like this you will find yourself unable to maneuver the weapon effectively for defense or offense except for hammering at something with the blade or pommel.

The top 2 pictures look like they are death gripping the sword handle... relax, hold firm but not try to strangle it.
