Description
These vines grow along hedgerows and roadsides near my dad's place in Vermont. I have always called them 'wild cucumbers' but have no idea what they really are. These fruit are spiky but the spikes are soft and not painful to touch. Also, the fruit is hollow. Each one is maybe two inches long. The vine sends out tenderals similar to grapes and have delicate white flowers. Any ideas? They don't grow any place South of Vermont as far as I know but maybe also they have some special acclimation to mountainous areas....Related content

I agree with Ganjmon . It's extremely invasive in Europe.

Echinocystis is a monotypic genus in the gourd family, Cucurbitaceae . The sole species is E. lobata, commonly called wild cucumber, prickly cucumber, or balsam apple. It is an annual, sprawling plant that is native to North America .
Searches for Echinocystis pull up images nearly exactly like the one here. So from what I can tell, it looks like you were right all along. Great shot.
