Twenty years ago, I wrote and illustrated role playing games for Palladium Books, including the Robotech license. One of the books I wrote and illustrated was Strike Force, which included a number of experimental and developmental mecha that would have existed in the time between the Macross and Southern Cross RPG timelines. The VF-1X was one of those mecha. It was a Macross styled veritech, but it used the transformation system which would later be incorporated into the alpha fighters.

Every time I look at a lot of my old illustrations, I have an itch to redo many. I've learned a lot in the last two decades that the 25 year old artist I was at the time did not, and plenty of that old art shows it (to me anyways). The VF-1X has always been one of those pieces I had a strong desire to rework, and I finally sat down to do it. This is a colored and toned reworking of the battloid and jet (fighter) modes for the VF-1X.
