Handler: Maj. Bennet Reid

“Yes, yes… I know! … er, I mean, yes sir.” Bennet quickly corrected himself as he held the phone close to his ear. He scrunched his nose unhappily – speaking with superior officers wasn’t always fun… especially when the refused to reassign your position to, I don’t know, someplace with less horses? And whiney teenage girls…

“Yes, sir. I understand. I won’t bother you again, sir. I apologize.” He sighed as he hung up and frowned at the screen. It looked like he would be staying at this little hell hole for a while longer. Speaking of which, he noticed sometimes the reception was pretty fuzzy out here. Which was why he was in the middle of one of the pastures, hands in pockets, waving off flies. The horses, long ago realize he hadn’t any tasty things with him, had left him for greener grass and ignored him.

Slipping the phone back into his pocket, he started off to make the tedious journey back to the stable office. He had only taken a few steps when he thought he heard another set of footfalls. He stopped.

So did the footsteps.

He tested it again, and the same happened. This time he stopped and pursed his lips with brow furrowed. “Look, beast, I don’t have anything for you, so why don’t you just leave me –“

He turned around and stopped short. His little shadow was… well, quite little and seemingly more than a little fidgety as she tossed her head up at his sudden movement. Regardless, she hesitated before tentatively moving towards him.

Bennet took a step backwards, “Oh no, I’m serious, this is a nice new tie and I’d rather it not get whatever germs you animals spread.”

The little mare paused, recognizing his tone. Like a spurned puppy, she wiggled her lips and stared at him with large, pleading eyes. Suddenly she sneezed explosively, spraying him with all sorts of nasal liquids.

“AUGH” Bennet’s hands shot up to try and protect what little of his body he could, but tie could not be saved. He stared down at his formerly white shirt with disdain before glaring at the little filly. “You did that on purpose didn’t you.”

She bobbed her head.

It was then that he noticed he was talking to a horse. Angry that he had let himself stoop so low, he waved a hand at her in an aggressive way, causing her to throw up her head, before turning around and storming away. It wasn’t long before he heard hoofbeats behind him, and he paused again.

He raised his eyebrow and pressed his lips together. He drew into a jog.

The hoofbeats padded faster.

He lengthened his stride.

She broke into a trot.

It wasn’t long before he was sprinting across the field laughing with the little filly cantering close on his heels with ears pricked and nostrils quivering with delight.
