Wow!! Thank you so much for your wonderful comment, words and for the link! I greatly enjoyed the poem..so poetic and invites one to a dreamland.
My favourite part is .."My daughter, my sister.." ..lines. It strongly talks about freedom, hope, peace and compassion! One could feel the smell of love and fragrances of wild flowers!
So definitely I will accept this invitation Wonderful title "Flowers of Evil"..but is it a work of different writers? Because I see different authors
Btw, which is your favourite part/line?
Oh I feel sad for "ix family"..they can't help Cleopatra! People at that time were not equipped with latest technology unlike today's, well what can one say about 'BC People".Her dead was like LP, in fact she committed suicide by allowing a snake to bite her! What a terrible fate of a domineering figure and one of the most beautiful woman!
Is it really 7 plagues? I thought it was more than 7

Oh gosh Hazel 7 plagues are not enough for you, you want more? 😂
Actually I think you are right, it is 10.
Btw, I wanted to ask you, why did you write Kleopatra VII? I have always only seen the spelling Cleopatra
You thought it looked more Egyptian? 😂
Some remarks about the plagues...
-- In the popular tradition, people speak more often of the 7 plagues than the 10, I can tell it is true in France, but I see my Google in English says, in its section "People also ask", when I type "egypt plagues":
"What were the 7 Plagues of Egypt?"
THEN:
"Why did the 10 plagues happen?"
-- The episode of the plagues of Egypt is related only in the Old Testament, which is not a very reliable nor precise historical source, to say the least. When you see the creation of the universe and the Earth (in fact it doesn't even make a difference between the two) took 7 days according to it, whereas according to science, the universe is 15 billion years old, and the Earth 5 billion... So that figure of 10 plagues is really questionable, assuming that there were ever plagues with which God would have punished Egypt because the Pharaoh would have driven the Jews out of that country, as told in the Bible, which is by no means a treatise of history or science.
-- Anyway that event is supposed to have happened long before the time of Cleopatra VII, so if you want to nitpick here you are likely to be told that all this is not very serious in terms of the historical facts, so you can tolerate some liberties with them, including the popular version of 7 plagues...
-- As for the "ix family" (lollll) and the continuation of the story of their meeting with Cleopatra, please wait to read the comics or see the movie before feeling sad, I don't want to spoil you but just consider it could end well* (actually this story with them and the plagues' plot remains to be written... ), because as you pointed it out lately, we are in a fictional context so everything is possible here... Including curing the worst plagues with Getafix's magic potion, which, I remind you, makes anyone who drinks it invincible for awhile**. Be logical Hazel 😂 Okay just kidding...
In fact and in conclusion, I really think you did well to point out the imprecision about the number of plagues. When you put numbers forward you have to be precise. As Lao Tzu the sage didn't say. But he could have indeed.
No, I didn't remember that Cleopatra "took her own life" the way the LP did!! At least according to a popular belief, says WP. Now I won't be surprised Saint-Ex had that idea of the snake because he knew that (supposed) fact about Cleopatra.
In the poem, you have the line "La splendeur orientale", The oriental splendor as you guess. I also think its author thought while writing it of the splendor of ancient Egypt. I just realize you could tell me Egypt isn't precisely in Orient (that is, "the countries of the East"), but its civilization is a great part of the "Orientalism", that artistic and literary movement Baudelaire was in, starting from the Napoleon campaign in Egypt (and even before maybe). In the same way, Morocco is as far west as the far west of Europe like Spain and Brittany, yet it is an Oriental country in the sense that it is of Arab language and culture.... Hey geography and history are humans sciences and NOT exact science......😂 I wonder what is, actually 😂 Certainly not medicine.....
Charles Baudelaire indeed is the author of the poem, which itself is one of the many pieces of his volume of poetry in verse "Les Fleurs du Mal", The Flowers of Evil. He is one of the most famous French poets. He lived in the 19th century. The other names you see in the link are those of the authors of various English translations of the poem. The first one is the most faithful, the last ones the least (as they are rhymed).
But the most faithful I know actually, the least treacherous, is the one I came out with DeepL, with some adjustments by me:
Invitation to the Voyage
My child, my sister,
Think of the sweetness
To go over there and live together!
Love at leisure,
Love and die
In the land that looks like you!
The wet suns
Of these blurred skies
For my spirit have the charms
So mysterious
Of your treacherous eyes,
Shining through their tears.
There, all is only order and beauty,
Luxury, calm and voluptuousness.
Gleaming furniture,
Polished by the years,
Would decorate our room;
The rarest flowers
Mingling their smells
To the vague scents of amber,
The rich ceilings,
The deep mirrors,
The oriental splendor,
Everything would talk
To the soul in secret
Its sweet native tongue.
There, all is only order and beauty,
Luxury, calm and voluptuousness.
See on these canals
Sleep those vessels
Whose mood is wandering;
It is to satisfy
Your slightest desire
That they come from the end of the world.
— The setting suns
Cover the fields,
The canals, the whole city,
Of hyacinth and gold;
The world falls asleep
In a warm light.
There, all is only order and beauty,
Luxury, calm and voluptuousness.
My favorite words? Wow, I'm just in wonder at all of them***. I love the ending, I love the chorus, I love... no I won't choose... But maybe I can tell you which ones I like the least... It is when he talk about "your treacherous eyes". Because, well it's quite trite, I don't like treachery. Do you
And do you think it is compatible with love, as Baudelaire seems to imply?
LAST MINUTE PS: speaking of a paradisaical place of love, and of hope of curing the world.... I just stumble across this: This is the song I like most of all Michael Jackso
* I think I have understood why you find boring the adventures of Asterix, must be because they always end well, with the traditional scene of the final banquet, where everyone makes up 😂 Hmm, this would assume you already read at least 2 albums to the end, which I rather doubt..
Never mind the spoil btw, these adventures are not suspenseful, but humorous stories!... And incidentally about friendship, solidarity and rebellion against the invader and his despotism. There is Asterix's spirit in all those who have fought, are fighting or will fight for their independence and freedom, like those Gauls led by Vercingetorix who defied Caesar, the French Resistance fighters of the WWII, or, more successfully, Prince Faisal's men revolted against the Turks of the Ottoman Empire.
** Prof. Raoult says he can save the world with his drug... this possible!... this is real!! So comics characters can do that as well, especially with Getafix!.. C'mon hazel, be rational, be lucid, hope for them and Cleopatra and her people!....
*** to me this poem is a perfect jewel, maybe the best of Baudelaire, and surely his most famous. The evocations, the images, the metaphors... The impression they have on the senses... The atmosphere... The tone, the tongue, this "sweet native tongue" of "the soul" (I told you about before)... The music... That takes me elsewhere...
In a land of love... Of shared wonderment and happiness...

Stunning composition. Love the way Kleopatra VII is reclining in her pose, with all her rich tapestries and treasure around her. Great attention to detail. And, beautifully lit!
