So, I've gotten into watching Criminal Minds... Mainly because it seems to always be playing on one channel or another whenever I turn on the TV! lol Random non-chronological marathons... Wikipedia helps me make sense of things, yeah. I like the quotes they throw in as a sort of narration at the beginning and end of the episodes, like this one..."Monsters are real, and ghosts are real too. They live inside us, and sometimes, they win." - Stephen King
That one's sorta relevant to my interest in the character of Spencer Reid, prodigal genius, who worries about the possibility that his schizophrenic mother has genetically passed down her illness to him! D: So, this piece is representative of his fear... that he'll someday become like one of the psychotic criminals he profiles and hunts down day to day. I'm caught between thinking something tragic like that would be too sad an outcome for him, and being interested in how it might potentially play out... Hm...
Oh (blabbering on) the title comes from Reid's fear of the dark. When asked why he's still afraid of the dark, he says it's "because of the inherent absence of light".
Anyway, I started using the "mixer" brush tool in Photoshop CS5 and wow, it's lovely! Feels so much more natural, being able to properly blend shades together with it... and it's certainly quicker than how I used to manage digital realism. Yay... Okay, here's everything I've mooched from others on this site, lol. Many thanks to them! ^__^

The composition is hauntingly beautiful as well as heartbreaking. As soon as I saw this, it was very clear to me where I've seen his expression beforeβ I only looked at the referenced link as a confirmation. What a splendid job! And you've succeeded in creating an emotional mess out of me and what seems to be the entire CM and MGG fandom. Poor Reid...
I also couldnβt help but admire the light/shadow contrasts, especially with the direction of his gaze. It somehow comes across as a night light-type of source, keeping in with the episode and the quote that inspired this piece, being the constant companion and, quite possibly, the only source of comfort in the state of mind and physical location heβs in.

This is absolutely fantastic and I at first thought that you had done this in graphite. This is really quite gorgeous and the concept behind it is...oooohhh, poor Reid, I do worry about that boy.
It also brings to mind the line he said, I think it was to Morgan, "I know what it's like to be afraid of your own mind."
In any case, very, very nice job. This is incredible.

Thanks so much! Oh, and I'm glad you thought this looked like it was done in pencil... That's actually my intention! I've been finding it difficult to make my digital pieces more painterly, probably because I'm not too good a traditional painter, lol. I thought since I was better with dry mediums like graphite and charcoal, I ought to try and emanate that kind of look.
Ah, yes, I remember that one! So many quotes seem to hint at something grim in store for Reid...
