Description
A commission for a friend! Some of you may remember me mentioning the HP fanart auction thing I helped out with, and I offered The Yule Ball and a commission as entries. One of the girls running the auction apparently liked my style enough that she actually aimed to get the commission from me, lol. Her request was herself and her boyfriend as Hogwarts students, and I did my best to get it right
I think I may avoid any and all lineart for a while after this piece though, lol.

Let's hope she and her boyfriend don't break up because of some stupid argument over their respective Houses. Listen, pal, your girlfriend is not evil just because she wears green and silver! And girl, don't think you have to go changing yourself completely just because your boyfriend gets huffy at times. Stand your ground; if he really cares for you it'll blow over. If not, you're better off without him.

Considering that House prejudices haven't changed a bit even nineteen years after the end of the war, I might say "sadly realistic" rather than pessimistic.

When it comes to House prejudices, the problem is at the school itself, and since three-quarters of the students (all the non-muggleborns) had parents who also went to Hogwarts and imbibed its prejudices, they all get it to one degree or another. It's up to the staff, beginning with the Headmaster, to do what they can to minimize it, and I didn't see that happening under the Dumbledore administration. Maybe McGonagall was better, but she was so much "Dumbledore's man" that I'm not hopeful.
Actually, since these are your friends, I assume they are muggleborns (you're a muggle, right?) and therefore are less tainted House hostility than students whose parents have House alliances of their own. The kids pick it up fast, though. Look at Hermione: on the train she already thinks Gryffindor is best for no better reason than because she "heard" that it was Dumbledore's House. Hermione, like Severus, really could have gone into any House: brave as a Gryffindor, bright as a Ravenclaw, loyal and hard-working as a Hufflepuff, and ambitious and ruthless as a Slytherin. A real quadruple-threat!

Well, that's one of the reasons the idea of Houses makes things messy at all. The moment there's a competition, people are much more likely to stick to their own Houses because they don't want to be seen as 'fraternizing with the enemy' sort of thing. I feel like it was actually better previous to Harry's generation, where people didn't really think of the Houses as divided. But with Voldy and his followers, suddenly the idea of trusting people you didn't already trust was downright scary. I feel like everyone withdrew into their own Houses as a family, as protection. And it didn't help that a great many of Voldemort's followers were Slytherins, which I feel really fueled the general hatred of the House by the time Harry started school there. And it'll likely take a bit of time for things to get better after the books too. But I feel that by the time the Next Gen rolls around things will have improved quite a bit, which is why the idea of the "new trio" people have basically created with Albus, Rose and Scorpius, works even if they're all in different Houses.
Well, I don't know them at all myself, so I have no idea what their blood types would likely be, lol.
As far as Hermione's bias, I think she was thinking purely along the lines that Dumbledore is one of the best wizards EVER and she already wants to be the best witch, so her mind automatically said "if I follow in his footsteps, it's a good start to getting there" sort of thing. She didn't know anything about the prejudice about the Houses, just their origin stories, because I doubt the books she studied would ever mention the students not getting along just because of their House.
And in any case, I believe every student has a little bit of each House's main traits to them. We're all a blend of them all. What the Sorting Hat looks at (at least in my head) is the traits that a person values most. Take Neville. He wanted to be brave so badly! Even if he wasn't, that was his idea of the best possible trait to have, and the Hat noticed that.

Well they aren't actually open right now. Like I mentioned, this commission was donated to an auction to raise money for Tumblr-Con. When I open commissions again I'll post and let everyone know
