Are you using Vue? If so.. is it a spherical map or just a flat image in the background?
One thing.. you may want to mess with the exposure and the contrast settings under atmosphere -> effects. That could help.

It is a spherical image map. However, I didn't have the image the correct size.
This image actually looks great on my bright ass monitor, to me.
