Very good work. I honestly would like to see this movie again. Then I'll know if it's worth watching next time.

What a great drawing! Just as in the spirit of the movie, it has the accent on the character's emotions You've captured the dark atmosphere of the movie so well! His expression, the lighting, the colors and all!

Ooh, thanks a lot for your great feedback!
I thought the film was really like a Greek tragedy, told by means of modern technology.

And thank YOU for sharing your beautiful drawings!
Yes, that's very well said, it definitely is a tragedy more than anything else and has the somehow simple, yet intriguing plot with deep and emotional characters.
And again, seeing your drawing immediately brings back Howard Shore's score in my head, especially the part which sounds when Seth first quarrels with Geena Davis and then goes out to the bar.. ahh..

Wonderful! A piece of superb fanart, really. And done in traditional media, wow! Fantastic. I love the shading/lighting and the way it looks like an actual movieshot on the thumbnail. To me this is the kind of stuff that makes Deviant Art worth browsing.
(...Why does this only have 8 favourites, mine included? That is a shame! )

Thank you very much!
I never thought of that, I mean, that the picture looks scientific. But you're right, of course. It's a great image of a scientist's craving for new knowledge and his courage to gain it. But that credit goes to director David Cronenberg, who created that image, not me!

Whiteling In reply to avoiding-you [2009-04-04 08:03:07 +0000 UTC]
Yes... ALMOST...
I was absolutely fascinated by Jeff's performance in this movie. I do like a good horror film, but I'm a bit of a wimp when it comes to bodily deformation and desintegration. And Cronenberg is known to be pretty generous in showing exactly this.
Thanks for the !

Oh boy... Oh boy... this is so awesome!!
It's so damn fine image...
The color and lighting are the best... Are these color pencils and water colors?.... Oh my... oh my... I'm astonished... my only complaint would be the right arm, but everything else... Oh... and double
Congrats for this masterpiece.

Yep, it's coloured pencils, water-colours and markers.
It's possibly the fingers that make the right arm look a bit weird, I know. I'm glad you like it despite this flaw!
And thanks a lot the the !

The movie is really excellent (not only super sci fi but also a great tragedy). But... WHAT? You watched it in your CHILDHOOD? Man, that's quite early for that kind of movie!!

mikeengelen In reply to Whiteling [2009-02-04 19:57:22 +0000 UTC]
That's right, that's actually what I told to a friend of mine: It's a perfect greek (geek? ) tragedy, where the hero in search of his dreams and seeking to control the direction of life, ironically, and as with all good tragedies, because of one single defect in his behaviour or irrational error in ways (He got jealous and drunk), so much like oedipus when he kills his father... because of one single mistake that could have been easily avoided (at least for others but not for the protagonist due to his tendencies in behaviour, hence making stronger the notion of unavoidable fate), things go horribly wrong.
Yeah... I watched it mhhmm... I must have watched it for the first time at six years old... no joke, yes, I know, but it didn't scare me or anything, actually movies like that, the Robocop movies, The fly, the fly 2, Del Toro's Cronos, Barry Levinson's "Toys", Terminator, Stephen King's "IT" and a lot others were what first engaged me into doing art.
The first movie that ever left me a bit scared was "La comunidad", (The community) from Alex de la Iglesia.
At finishing watching that movie I could just think: Ew that was like... damn...
It shows a highly cartoony, yet, not precisely impossible darks turns of human behaviour, particularily greed and its consequences, and actually it quite ressembles real interaction in rotten groups of people; the narrative is achived without too much freudian clichΓ©s, except from some geeky guy and an old grumpy rancorous lady, and that is outstanding since that movie could have very easily relied on that.
And the movie goes totally from the perspective of the heroine, One really gets to understand her, and that makes you feel scared as she would be from the other people's attacks. Although she's not precisely a saint herself, but she's not in the same league of depravation as the other people that haunt her.

I like films with g(r)eek tragedy stories! In fact, it's always the good storytelling that make a film work, in my opinion. The most complicated SFX or CGI doesn't help if the storytelling is not gripping.
You watched the "Fly" at the age of 6! I must admit I find it most unusal that you didn't response with shock and fear, but found your way to the arts through it. That's really a special reaction! But everyone to his liking, I say. In your case it seems the horror stuff turned on your creativity. (I recall that when I watched the Christopher Lee Dracula films at the age of 9 or 10, I sat down afterwards and tried to draw the Count.)
Thanks for pointing me to "La comunidad". I looked it up at IMDB (I knew Alex de la Iglesia only from "The Oxford Murders" so far) and think it might be a movie I could enjoy. It's described as "darkly comedy thriller" and as reminiscent of Polanski's "The Tenant" (one of the films I admire) - sounds good to my ears. Will definitely look out for it.

Complex meaningful contents and as narrative elements or "sense" are what make the essence of fantasy... Homer knew it, Shakespeare and Cervantes knew it, Asimov and Fritz Lang did as well...
Yes... flashy scenes should try to work in favor of the story or at least to enhance the story's proper "vibe"
(As in the Matrix, the effects were not only awesome, they always had a reason for being there, they aided or were key elements in the storytelling or the techno-surrealist vibe, for example the bullet dodge was an statement of Neo's new abilities and the bullet time's look itself had a subtext: that that world was artificial and could be viewed from us outsiders as such, enhancing the feeling of artificiality)
Have you seen "The Campanile movie" short
Those movies, for me, "felt" deifferent I know what you mean, after I saw Robocop 2, I had a period where I was obsessed with machines... I even "built" one out of pots and made a corporative product presentation in front of my family!!!!
Ah!! Holy...!!! By the way check the movie "virus". Not very profound in plot, apparently, but the vibe and concept is just brutal!!!
Well thanks for letting me know about "The Tenant"... I'll surely check it out. The only movie I ever watched from Polanski was the recent Oliver Twist version, and I was blown. The end of the old crazy man... that was heartbreaking...
I would like to recommend you, heavily, "The legend of 1900", it's not from Polanski, but is about a pianist... I do love that movie, personally I see myself there... and I think a lot of people could relate themselves to his life.

Interesting recommendations, thank you!
Saw none of the films you mentioned - will see if I can get "The legend of 1900", that one sounds very good and it has Tim Roth in the main part, one of those actors I'd like to see more often! He's great.
Apropos Polanski: particularly the films he made in the 60s are very worth watching (well, all of his films are worth watching!). Do you know "Repulsion" or "Rosemarys Baby"? The more I watch those movies the more I detect details that make them so absorbing and classic.

No problem!
I knew "Rosemary's Baby", I saw it long time ago... but think I should go and get it since I don't remember too much!
Yes, they know how to put significant subtleties, that get to be very abstract things, they cannot be easily pointed at and described... but there they are... I love it!!
