Description
I did this exercise to get back on my feet.I started doing it for the patterns on their skin only, but then i imagined the colors and soon i was also concerned about the shapes. I started looking for interesting patterns/shapes on existing animals. 2nd row 3rd head is heavily inspired by antelopes, 2nd row 4th started out as crocodile-ish, and midway i looked up butterflies. 3rd row 1st head is fully based on butterflies. 3rd row 4th head is based on horses, and 2 kinds of goats (mountain goat and markhor). 4th row 1 and 2 and the last head are based on crustaceans, especially on one that i didn't even find a Wikipedia article about (Acanthonotozoma). This is just a fraction of animals i referenced.

Indeed , I agree completely ! It's not very relevant for the producers because the target audience doesn't really care , i guess. Yes, new designs and concepts do put alot at risk , and also in alot of shows and movies , dragons aren't really the main cause for people to watch them.
Yes ! In GoT , the dragons do play a very relevant part in the show , but i guess not as relevant as the dragons from HttYD. It is true , alot of people prefer to remain with what is familiar to them , than to take the risk of accepting new things , so it is indeed ,as you say , an inborn human trait.
It's okay , I share the exact same opinion as you do! I only wish more people were as open-minded as you are.
But who knows ? Maybe in a few years , these designs and concepts might become more popular , and I sincerely hope so! ^_^

These are absolutely amazing and I'm sorry if this is rude to ask but may I have permission to print this out and put it on my wall for motivation/inspiration?

Could I draw full-bodies for some of these?

Sorry for the late reply.
That depends If it's for practice but nothing serious, then it would be okay of course. But if you claimed the design as yours entirely after you are done giving it a body, i wouldn't be amused...

Nice designs, great line work and details!
What is the script? A homemade language or is that just artistic hungarian?

Sorry i didn't spot your comment earlier, i don't know why didn't i.
More than a decade ago i made it to be my 'secret writing' but i also appointed it to be an alphabet in a fantasy realm i'm designing.
Here i used it to note sources of inspiration for designs i had planned to draw (e.g. blue morpho wing pattern, crystal shapes, deer spots)

Yeah that's cool. Encoding English using foreign characters, pretty neat. The real hard stuff is actually making a foreign language to go along with it.

Indeed I'm still in the process of making the language. Hard without being pro in linguistics.

One them looks roughly based on the Andrewsarchus. Are most of them based on prehistoric animals?
π: 0 β©: 1
WhiteRaven90 In reply to Asuma17 [2012-11-05 14:21:31 +0000 UTC]
Most of them have patterns on them from animals that are not extinct. I had only one book about dinosaurs among the series of books that feature animals, and it didn't have too many inspiring things in it.

Ooooo I love the bottom left one and the antelope one. Very detailed and beautiful. Would you mind if I used some of these as inspirations? I haven't drawn dragons in awhile and I find that I'm a little rusty at coming up with designs and layouts. I just cant stop staring at these. (:

I love the detail you put into these designs! They are all beautifully realistic, and I am fascinated by your ability to apply patterns you see in nature and let them flow into these designs so easily!
Oh yes and one more thing: I would really appreciate it if you had a look at my profile... I've just begun submitting art, but my drawings seem to be getting lost among a lot of others on deviantart that nobody notices. I'd really love to hear your opinion on them. Thank you!

When I typed in my search, I honestly didn't expect such great results.
I love this. It's exactly what I was looking for, for that I thank you.
I believe you've inspired me, or at least helped me with my struggles on how to approach the head of my dragon drawings.
Fav for sure.

i love how you draw the scales, do there's a technique to do that? or it is just practice.

WhiteRaven90 In reply to laroku1 [2012-07-27 10:34:54 +0000 UTC]
Thanks. I just observed various scaly animals and practiced drawing. There is order in every kind of 'scale-type', it just needs to be found.

If removed from the process how difficult would this picture have been to make with NO referances to RL animals or images?
π: 0 β©: 1
WhiteRaven90 In reply to AnuOjat [2012-05-29 15:58:01 +0000 UTC]
I didn't use references, i just looked up animals and applied the patterns that i liked to the dragons. If i didn't look stuff up, i wouldn't have had inspiration, and if i didn't have inspiration, these ideas would simply not exist, so it isn't a matter of difficulty.

AnuOjat In reply to WhiteRaven90 [2012-05-30 22:09:03 +0000 UTC]
Hehe, i want to ask this cause i USED to think that all master artists never had to look at or study animal anatomy. Or atleast had to do it less than those who were not master at drawing-
π: 0 β©: 1
WhiteRaven90 In reply to AnuOjat [2012-05-31 18:01:14 +0000 UTC]
It's probably the opposite. I have a humongous reference image collection with ~20000 images. Although studying anatomy is not necessary. No need to know the name of each muscle and bone, it's enough if you know things about them.
π: 0 β©: 1
AnuOjat In reply to WhiteRaven90 [2012-05-31 20:09:36 +0000 UTC]
Thanks, that is always very reassuring when master/experienced artists tell me things such as these.
ITs distances amateurs/beginners from feeling overwhelmed by not reaching that image thats in their mind
