Description
...Could apply to any portrait drawing, actually...Well, I know it's weird and maybe this could make me look conceited, but I made this thing because he's AWFULLY difficult to draw and I'm sort of an expert in Reidology now. Counting also my failed attempts, I drew him more than 30 times.
And it was rather instructive.
**Sorry for the typing mistakes, too late to correct them XD
***Suddenly, I feel the need to stress one point: TAKE MEASUREMENTS while drawing the first construction lines. That's the most important thing you do while drawing portraits, unless you have a really trained eye.

nothing conceited about it--useful information, and i'm off to the light table to see if I can copy it until I can do it. You are so wonderful with pencil! I always enjoy what you do.

Thanks, but I don't know if the light table is a good idea. Actually, I've done the tutorial to show how to AVOID light table When making my first failed attempts (those I never uploaded
) I used it a couple of times to trace a photo. I didn't understand the real shape of his face and the result wasn't good at all. Started to see something good when I discarded it and tried to make it all freehand.

tnx for the tip on the light table--you saved me a bunch of work--especially trying to dig the light table out from under stuff!

Besides, trying to copy my sketches is useless. They're always a lot different from the finished work. Working from the model is MUCH better.

I LOVE the dark circles under Gubler's eyes, weirdly enough. He's stated they're natural and he hates/tries to object when make-up artists try to cover them up. (You can see this in his early promo photos for CM coming out, they photoshopped 'em. XP) And I absolutely love drawing those circles. X3 Besides, I think they fit Reid. It suits him that he looks like he's staying up late all the time, whether it be working on some new math theory, going over a paper he wrote on psychopathy, or just catching an all-night Dr. Who marathon on BBC. XD

That's the point. They *should* be a flaw, usually, but look good on him. It's not weird, it's part of his attractiveness and one of the things that make him so difficult to draw. I've seen some portraits in which badly done circles made him look like a hopeless junkie. AND an ugly one.

That's hilarious. Makes me think of a while ago A.J. Cook uploaded a photo of herself on twitter with her make-up on for a role in a movie where she's playing a heroine addict. My GOD it's terrifying how much like a creepy junkie she looked when she's usually so pretty. XD;

Amphata In reply to whiteshaix [2011-07-15 12:54:11 +0000 UTC]
Sì, inguardabili...! Ci credo mica, io!
Piglio e disegno, così, a cacchio.

Mah. Chissà come verrebbe il dr. Reid fumettato?

whiteshaix In reply to raka-raka [2011-07-13 20:47:38 +0000 UTC]

whiteshaix In reply to SicilianValkyrie [2011-07-13 19:52:01 +0000 UTC]
Well, it's more oriented towards the "dark side" of people. The main characters are a FBI profilers' team who try to catch serial killers, most of the time. To succeed, they must try to understand how they think, why they do what they do.
Almost everyone of the main characters is definitely interesting, with different qualities and skills and some flaws. Dr. Reid is a multi-graduated genius with some borderline autistic traits and a lingering fear of becoming schizophrenic eventually. And he's totally unaware of his awesomeness, too.
