EDIT 2: Some people have noted that their SAI does not do this. It is because it is not an updated version of SAI that supports transparency. There used to be a journal/ link that I had in the comments which led to a Transparency-supporting SAI, but this link is now down. I do not have a new link; please research and find a transparency-supportive SAI by your own means.ΒMy first tutorial lolol //fail
A lot of people have been asking me how to do transparent backgrounds in Paint TOOL SAI. There weren't any tutorials on dA that seemed to be as simple as how I did it (there were barely any in the first place so.)
If you have some trouble understanding the summarized pictures, here's some more info on it.
Basically, in SAI everything you draw is automatically "transparent". When you save as JPEG, which doesn't support transparency, everything "transparent" is turned to white, like how you see it when you are drawing in the program.
Adding a new layer underneath and making it a different color allows you to see things you missed, preferably the whites. Let's say that when I added the yellow, Casey's white hoodie turned yellow also. That means I need to go in and color it white or else it will become transparent as well.
Saving it as 32bpp makes all the areas you didn't draw on turn transparent.
Some tutorials say that you have to merge all your layers into 1. That is not true. I could have had 3 or 4 layers on that Casey picture, it doesn't affect transparency.
I hope you guys find this helpfull!

You can try using GIMP! It's free and is somewhat similar to photoshop. You can make transparent backgrounds on gimp ^^

I understand all of this. But I have a different problem.
I drew something yesterday and finished the line art. I knew everything was transparent before I saved so I thought everything was fine. But when I opened my drawing today I saw that I couldn't color my drawing. Everything that was white was indeed white, and not transparent.
I need to know how to make an existing image that has no transparency transparent without erasing my black line art. If anyone could help me I'd be very happy! This is a pain in the ass to fix!

This is a problem you can easily fix in photoshop. I'm making a tutorial for it right now, but if you were to open the jpeg file in photoshop, change the mode to Grayscale, select the while from the channels, and then in a new layer paint the inverted selection with black, you would have your lineart without the white background.Β

So, I did everything you said, got the version (1.1.0) mentioned in the journal you linked to, and the second window, the part about saving it in the 32pbb, didn't show up. Is there maybe ANOTHER reason why that window wouldn't show up? Thanks for the tutorial though, and thanks for the help.

Make two copies of the picture (SAI format), open the second one, crop it to how you want it, then save it with that method.

Now the journal in the description makes more common sense of
why I get these problems all the time. I listen to these tutorials
over and over again and it's the VERSION that had my problem with
transparency.Β
Thank's for warning me to check the description to be sure why it
still doesn't work. TT u TT
