“What about Venture Winds?” I asked as the sale began to wind down for the day, we only had about eight horses left. Danny handed me the program with the third to last horse circled. Sired by Unbridleds Song out of the Seattle Slew mare, Surfside, a great racer. I was surprised when the wide eyed colt stepped into the ring and wasn’t grey like most Unbridled progeny, he was bay, and he was the biggest two year old I had ever seen! I heard and audible ’damn!’ behind me as the giant stalked into the ring and proceeded to circle, showing off his shiny dappled hide. Bidding started at $85,000. Danny hesitated, for a long time, I began to worry if he was even going to bid. When the price climbed up to $175,000 John elbowed his trainer and then raised his own hand. Danny was contemplating something, I could see his wheels turning. Three bids later the famed trainer raised his hand and the colt’s price was at $210,000. John said he was willing to go to three hundred and we continued bidding until the others stalled at $285,000. The gavel fell and the dappled bay calmly exited the arena, and so did we.

Other: His main passion is food, and his second is running. He’s slow out of the gates but once he gets going he’s like a train, chugs along and is difficult to stop. He’s nervous around other horses and he decided to let Claire Stackhouse take the wheel to calm him down. A great horse in the barn until he gets bored, then he is quite willing to kick the walls down.
Build: Perfectly balanced throughout, roman nosed with somewhat convex profile, large eyes and nostrils, long but stout, strong legs and good feet. If he doesn’t excel as a racer he would make a great show horse, his conformation is impeccable.
