My loverly husband bought me a handsome little beigey-silver fancy rat for an early Valentine's gift. I've been wanting one for a while, and he seems to be such a sweet little guy. Strife is quite taken with him and they play well together, under direct supervision of course! Here is Mr. Piccolo and Strife getting acquainted.Related content

NO WAY. O.O When I first brought my tan and white fancy rat Tsume home, the first thing he did was get stepped on by the weiner dog! Ever since then Tsume hated my dacshund.

Cute!! The way your rat sits on the edge of his cage reminds me of the way one of my rats doing that... I miss him.
(Rats usually lives up to two, three years but all my four rats lived to four and five!)

Unfortunately my little babies make the cats tremble in fear and the only dog we have is a rat-dog. He shivers with excitement while he lays on the other side of the gate that is across my doorway.

well i worked in a pet store, so i know pretty much everything i need to know about these little furry friends! well ill just ramble off some information for you!
one thing, make sure the cage is large enough, rats grow quickly and need lots of room. for my 2 rats, i have a 2 level cage, with lots of room (planning on taking some pictures soon, and ill show you) and my other rat is in a rather small cage, which needs to be upgraded ASAP. they like to have space, and need room to get around. well, unless you take them out a lot and spend time with them outside their cage
when you feed them, there is a product called "Nutri Blocks" they are little brownish coloured rectangles, my rats just love them, i give them about 3 or 4 each a day, with about a teaspoon of the seed mix. the blocks are normally recommended because rats will be picky little buggers, and will dig through the seeds and only eat what they want, but they will eat these blocks and what the blocks are, is all the seed mixture ground up into a rectangle. it makes sure they are getting everything they need!
now, if you go to a petstore, most people will tell you not to put in kleenex boxes/paper rolls, etc because the glue on the box can be harmfull to the rodent. well, this is a myth as far as i know, a selling technique to buy their products. all 3 of my rats have had a kleenex box each in their cage, and they are all in perfect health! so watch out for what people will try to sell you, just to make a sale. but dont quote me, it could be true. but my rats chew up the boxes, and there is nothing wrong with them!
bring your furry little friend out a lot, rats will usually sit on your shoulder, even while you walk around, they have a lot better balance than most rodents, a hampster for example would fall off and most likely die, while a rat can walk around and cling to you. oh i just love them!

I think his color might be pearl. Erfh, Im not sure, I know a good deal about rat colorings but I get mixed up when it comes to the pearly/merley colors. He is purdy!

As for tips, hmmm, I could go on and on and on, but the best tip I think I can give is to give him lots of love and attention ^_^. It's actually best for rats to live with at least one roommate too, since they are social animals and live in groups. Even if you play with them a lot, they still like another fuzzy butt to cuddle when they're cold or sleepy. Intorducing a new rat can be hard though, especially with boys. Sometime's it goes smoothly, sometimes they freak out. We have a new baby we're trying to intro to our girls..they are being such hookers about it...glugh.

My husband was refusing to get me one because we already had a dog, a chinchilla, and a dwarf hamster, but he relented. I hope your mom eventually breaks and lets you get one. They are sooo friendly.
