Description
Drawn in Inkscape for my ongoing Western Empire map project and adapted from this excellent tutorial . I incorporated symbols of the Western Empire that are appearing elsewhere in the map both into and around the compass. This image will go in as a layer on the final map itself as if it was physically attached to the map (hence the elements that aren't directly attached). I went heavy on the gold because the Western Empire is filthy rich.
For the nitpickers out there, yes, I know that circles are usually marked in 120 degree increments. Well, the Western Empire's degrees are three times as wide, because they care less about precision navigation than they do about looking fabulous and conquering the world.

You did a flat out great job with this, nice Inkscapery! I'd ease back the shadows for the upper 3/4, on my monitor at least they're too heavy, and distract from the great illustrative work you've done.

Ok, I took another look at it this morning, and I think I know what you mean. The shadows of the wreath and eagle were too heavy because I duplicated them after I'd added the drop shadow effect and didn't realize it. I've deleted the excess layers. I also fixed the numbers on the dial so that zero is north. Better?

You got it - nice balance now, the shadows aren't overpowering and your foreground comes through like it should; great job!

Thanks for pointing it out! I would have totally missed it on my own.

I know I'm on the right track when I have an Inkscape guru like yourself speaking well of what I'm doing. While I really appreciate the feedback, I'm not sure what you mean by the upper 3/4. Are you talking about the reflective shadow pattern on the surface of the compass rim? The shadow cast by the compass itself? The bevel effects on the wreath, eagle, and dog bits, or something else? Apologies for my confusion.
